| LA Info Please: Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village | Fast Eddy Jun 12, 2003 12:19 PM | | I got a contract job in Westlake Village for two months. I'll be working long hours when I'm down there, but a guy has to ride, right?
How long does it take to get to Hwy 1 on Big Sycamore Canyon Road? I was thinking about the camping option to keep expenses down. Any camping closer?
Any good rides closer to Westlake Village? |
| re: LA Info Please: Thousand Oaks/Westlake Village | Hollywood Jun 12, 2003 1:23 PM | | some info:
Newbury Park is also close and has some riding as well as bike shops. Check with Newbury Park Bikes for local trails. (805)498-7714
Sycamore Cyn. is a popular spot for riding, along with a trail I only know as 'switchbacks' in NP. Maybe check the Trailheads section of SoCalmtb.com for other trails in the area (LA & Ventura counties). Chesebro is also a good, popular area. Exit Chesebro off the 101.
The whole Santa Monica mtns range is just down the 101 as well - tons of riding there.
not sure on camping or the Sycamore drive.
give us a holla!

Ranch... and they link up with Chesebro. The Kanan portion of the Backbone trail and Los Robles are also nearby. |

We're working all this weekend, so I won't be able to come home like we'd planned. Call me on my cell phone if you need me.

| One day ok, but what about nights? nm | Fast Eddy Jun 12, 2003 10:19 PM | | |
| Yup - plenty of night rides too!... | terminaut Jun 12, 2003 10:36 PM | | El Prieto is a fun night ride in LA. Bring your lights down. |
| Man, you guys are making me nostalgic! | The MTBDOC Jun 13, 2003 6:54 AM | | I grew up in T.O. [Lynn Ranch] in the 60's...back before motorcycles had become evil, there was so much good riding it was incredible. I left in '71; last visited in '83...the growth even 20 yrs ago was incredible. Since I started this mtb thing 10 yrs ago, I have thought of how great the terrain around there would have been for mtb'ing.
Just recalled psycho-riding we did on our stingrays...the two big hills nearby were terrible to try to get up on a bicycle, but we did come down those things a couple of times..."water-tank hill" was what we called the smaller, and "sugarloaf" the larger...man, this takes me back! And when they started terracing the section along Lynn Road for condos, they made incredible jumps for motorcycles and bicycles...okay, enough of 30-something year-ago memories.
SOMEDAY I need to get out there and ride! |
| There is a fun ride starting at.... | Mountain Cycle Shawn Jun 15, 2003 8:49 PM | | the Chesebro trail, which is close to the 101 and the Chesebro exit. It goes from there north over the mountains into Simi Valley and ends at the end of first street in the Wood Ranch housing project, where you turn around and go back. Its made up of some steep long climbs, which means some steep down hills, single track and fire roads. I'm not sure how long it is but it will take a good 3 hours if you don't stop. |
