Singlespeed poser, can I join?(10 posts)

Singlespeed poser, can I join?næstep

Stumbled upon another outrageous deal yesterday.

On my way home with a load of Costco toilet paper in the car, I got off at the wrong exit and ran smack into a one year-old bike shop that I never knew existed. I couldn't resist the temptation; I had to park the car and go in.

Wouldn't you know it -- sitting out in front of the store was a fire engine red Van Dessel Straight-Up x7. Yeah, sure, it has a Shimano Nexus 7 speed hub and coaster brakes, but not much else. A svelte 27 pounds(*Gah!*). Priced to move: $199!

This was sooo close to being a sweet victory. Problem is, I'd been looking at this very bike on eBay for weeks, but didn't want to shell out the $370 it would have taken to get it direct from Van Dessel. So just two weeks ago, I gave up and bought a $99 used Rockhopper, circa 1989 (Biopace chainrings even), to use as my "casual" bike-path-cruisin'-around-the-waterfront bike. So as soon as I can sell off the Rockhopper and reclaim my money, all will be well in the universe (and my wife will quit strangling me in her mind).

The cool news is that with the Nexus joining the fleet, I am still derailleur free among all three bikes! Yippee!

Not exactly off-road worthy (that wasn't the intent), but let's face facts: This is the closest me and my problematic knees will ever get to a singlespeed. And heck, I can only use one speed at a time anyway, right? So how about it? 1/7th membership?

I know you and yer sneaky tricks... Now yank that rear wheel outta there and shove in an honest 1x wheel... yer 1/7th of the way there, no sense in turnin' back now!

C'mon, Nate -- yer legs can handle it. :D

P.S. $199? Jeez, do they have another in XL?

P.P.S. Remember my Sugar's a 1x7... can't we get mtbr to start a 1x7(+) board?
This one is a 56cm...næstep

...which I guess translates to a 19". VD does make a 59cm, though -- but this was the last one left. But to help matters, the top tube curves UP, to ensure solid contact with the boys.

They did have a pair of singlespeed Straight-Ups (no Nexus hub) for about $150. Same frame in yellow, with moustache bars. Didn't see what size frames though.

Me on the other hand, I'd be willing to give up my Schwinn for one of these any day.

This is the only bike I'm planning to actually use on the roads. I was kinda' hoping I could keep 'em. please???

How about the obscene stem in trade?

Looks like it's worth $199 all by itself.

Do you mean 199mm? (nm)næstep

More on the reflector issue....Ss Jerry

Reflectors just give car drivers something to aim for in the dark....

JS
sure you can join, but move that shifter...redhaze
Jul 24, 2003 6:46 PM
to your seatpost. It'll be a bit harder to shift, mebbe you'll just stand up and pump up the hill 'stead a shifting. In a nutshell,
b that
is what SS is about.

and yer handle bars will be ultra clean!

nice bike, I don't know how they can push those bikes out the door for that.

coaster brakes are FUN! but very dangerous on tight twisty singletrack (speaking from experience...)

congrats!
