| What is the best rigid fork? | artbrad Jul 27, 2003 2:09 PM | | I have a Ventana El Toro single speed and am currently running a Manitou Mars carbon fork, but want to go rigid, so that I can put the manitou on my geared bike for 24 hour races. Does anyone have suggestions as to what the best rigid race fork would be? |
| It's probably a toss-up.............. | Mike T. Jul 27, 2003 2:23 PM | | ....between the Morati titanium and the Pace carbon fiber. We've no way of measuring "best" (I hate Best questions) so the Morati is more money so maybe it's the best. It's certainly (of the two) the lightest by less than 100g and more expensive by $200.
My Pace CF is certainly a beaut and I don't miss front suspension one bit - especially seeing as my 700g fork is ½ the weight of a decent suspension fork.
If money is a factor then I'd imagine a cheap steel for is the "best" as it will be 1/7th the cost of my Pace and certainly not double the weight. I had a steel fork though (Spicer) and it stung my wrists. My Pace doesn't. So if you're cheap and don't give a $hit about your wrists then go with a steel fork.
So you see why any "best" question doesn't work. |
| best STEEL fork depends on what you want out of a fork | club Jul 28, 2003 4:29 AM | | if you want a plush ride with a minumum of hand sting, it's hard to beat a Ritchey Logic. For a firmer ride and a more rigid connection to the wheel, it's hard to complain about a Koski Type II or one of its several clones; or the Yeti/Answer AccuTrax I'm running on my Merlin, it's oh so sweet. A Bonty Composite is also a great ride. Steer clear of Tange Switchblades, which look like a Bonty, but ride like a pair of oak logs. |

| Best Fork? Try this if you can find one.... | SS Jerry Jul 27, 2003 4:04 PM | | Bar none, The best static fork, or as they are called today, Rigid, happens to be the Fat City Big One Inch fork. Fat City actually built two great forks, the Team Yo Eddy fork and the Big One Inch. Shame they are not available anymore. I have used the Big One inch fork on one of my bikes for 12 years. 6 of those years were jumping and trials style riding.
Only my opinion though... like your nose... everybody has one.

| If you can't find one of those... | Halloween Jul 27, 2003 6:45 PM | | Check out the Sycip segmented forks, they are almost identical to the Fat City forks. I have one, and really dig on it. |
| I knew Jeremy and JB when... | SS Jerry Jul 27, 2003 7:01 PM | | I saw them start in a little back lot store in an industrial park in Fremont, CA. They had just came back from Frame building school and were pumped up to get it on. I saw the first hand painted frames they produced and was actually one of their first customers when John ran the Psycho cycles store. They have now moved out to Napa California.
They have come a long ways and their work has gotten better and better each year. I wish them the best.
Their segmented fork is a close copy of the Fat City, So is the Spicer Ti fork. One difference is the support tabs that Fat city put on the rear of the tubes of the forks. This was to aid in structural strenght when landing jumps and plowing into things.

| not the dimension disc | Aesop Rock Jul 27, 2003 4:09 PM | | that fork is garbage IMHO, I didn't misuse it at all, just some tough rock gardens and it folded on me. great price though. |
| I like my Kelly, but... | Fast Eddy Jul 28, 2003 9:37 AM | | ...I cracked one. I'm 190, and I don't ride slow or carefully though. I'm currently giving them another chance, and it's still in one piece after a thousand miles or so of hard riding.
If you want light, I had a Kinesis rigid aluminum mtb fork on my El Toro, but man it was Stiff. |
| any one have opinions on the on-one rigid fork ? | Bingo Jul 28, 2003 1:25 PM | | looking at a fork upgrade for my inbred & obviously am looking at one of these - can anyone comment on the ride, damping etc ??
cheers & no gears |
| re: What is the best rigid fork? | scurra Jul 28, 2003 7:11 PM | | I love the ride of the ritchey logic, got one on my MB-0 and one on my Merlin Mountain. Although, I love the look people have when they try to figure out my Bontrager. I usually get, "How did you convert your suspension fork..?"
Verdic: I give the Ritchey solid marks for dependability. And I give the Bontrager high style points. |
