anyone ever do group buys on here?(14 posts)

anyone ever do group buys on here?iliketoridebikes

I used to lurk on some VW vortex forums and those guys were always setting up group buys on different tackle for their coffins. The concept, in case you're unfamiliar, is several people all buy the same item and get a really good deal. I would imagine it would be a good way for people to hook up on things like lighting systems, wheelsets, carbon goodies, car racks, cranks, frames, forks, etc...... It benefits the buyer(s) and the seller.
forums are really good places to organize the group buys, and this one seems pretty busy, so is anyone interested?
I'm always interested in a good deal! (nm)Fast Freddy

i'm also a regular (viewer, not poster) at vwvortex and tsxclub and have also thought about group buys here at mtbr. i'm looking into buying a jet lighting system and a group buy did cross my mind the other day while reading reviews (man, all the reviews for jet lights are awesome!!!). it would be interesting to see a vendor's point of view on group buys in regrads to mtb stuff. maybe i'll give larry mettler a call on monday and get his opinion.
cheers.

if a few of you in your local area want to order inbred frames or parts, I'm sure we could work something out.

start a new thread with a title such as "group buy on niterider storm lights" or something like that. see who responds.

I can provide the hook-up on redline, surly, niterider, mavic, bontrager, salsa, speedplay, etc...

For me to provide group buys, I would like to get at least 5 individuals in on each buy.

what kind of discounts are these "hookups" offering? I handle the sponsorship issues with our MTB team and a lot of time the "Pro deal" pricing these mfgs are offering are really not any better than you can get from a regular web retailer. A lot of times you can get much greater discount with a group order buying the product from a web retailer. This is where I have found some of the best buys. But all my group orders have been for the odd ball and not available in the US market items.

I have organized quite a few group orders in the past......I did an Extralite (www.extralite.com) order about a year and a half ago (about a $1200 worth), a Continental Explorer Supersonic order (ordered about 26 tires) and currently have a Noxian NBX lite group tire order coming in (ordered 38 tires). I have found that the group order works very well when ordering from Europe....especially when the exchange rate is in our favor...right now it is not, but really is not that bad. Also benificial on parts not available in the USA. Generally with a group order you should be able to get a volume type discount and free shipping...that is key since with a group order if you have to pay shipping you really are paying it twice since the buyer will have to ship it to each individual.
Check around with a few different sellers as discounts can vary greatly.
Examples: With the Extralite order we were saving if I recall close to 40% off retail, Contintal Supersonics were $39....bought them for about $22ea. Nokian NBX lites are $40, buying them for $29.

Logistics for the point person are a pain in the a$$ and you always have the possibility to not get paid...but in 3 orders I have not had a single problem (knock on wood).
