gone rigid/fat tire, some observations..........hu-man

for anyone thinking about losing the boinger and going rigid with a FAT tire. My set up first:

Brodie Evolution from 98 - nice steel canadian hardtail
Gearing 32:18
Surly fork
Maxxis Mobster 2.7" (really 2.5")at 30 psi
Rhyno lite rim
Formula disc hub

Con - overall, the front end is heavier, the wheel in particular.
Con - more bump shock is felt in the hands.
Con - cannot just point it downhill and let the shock do the work.

Pro - I never realized how much pedaling energy was lost to the bobbing fork, especially on climbs. While the rigid bike is heavier, it moves ahead more efficiently with the rigid fork. Definitly an advantage out of the saddle when cranking away up a hill.
Pro - the steering is much more precise
Pro - the fat tire at low pressure does absorb alot of the stutter bumps.
Pro - on decents the bike feels more stable because I have to concentrate to pick a line and control my speed. Also the front end does not suddenly "steepen up" if it hits a bump or drop off, as happens with the boinger fork.

Over all, I'm very happy and its more fun and more of a challenge.
Hu-man, you've reached the next level!xrmattaz

I started out SS with a setup much like yours...and never looked back. Rider input on a SS with rigid/fattire is unbelievable, IMO.

And ohhh sooo simple! Congrats.
forgot to add, thanks for the help to all who gave advice!!!!!nmhu-man

My thought, too. 30psi is still high pressure for that tireshiggy©®™

I run 15-20 psi in my Gazzi 2.6 on the front.

I'm 300lbs & run a Mobster 2.7 at 20-25 psi and have yet to pinchflat. Try it at a lower pressure, you'll be surprised by the difference.
