| New Rims | DT Nov 12, 2003 1:13 PM | | So Mavic has come out with their new line of rims, I was going to get the 317 disc specific rims, but they are gone. I also just heard that running a wide tire on a 317 could pose problems and that if I'm running anything over a 2.25 I should look at a different rim.
Any suggestions on the newer rims?
I'm currently thinking I might just go with the x3.1 UST Disc rim - it's possible to run regular tires on a tubeless rim right? I want to be able to run at least a 2.6 tire.

| my experience | zzyxzz Nov 12, 2003 2:17 PM | | For what it is worth, I have 317 rims on 2 bikes. One has WTB Motoraptor 2.4 tires on it and the other has Maxxis Bling-blings 2.35 (I think) - both have never had a problem.
Good luck |
| Few new Mavic rims, all have new names | shiggy©® Nov 12, 2003 2:51 PM | | The 317 is now the XC 717 disc. No change to the rim itself.
I run all size tires including 2.6" on Velocity VXC rims (same size and shape as the 317) with no issues. Some riders prefer a wider rim.

| skinny v. wide | LocoToo Nov 13, 2003 7:24 AM | | My Hugi/Sun DS1XC wheelset feels faster but less stiff than my XT/Rhyno XL setup. In general, I would say a wider rim makes a stiffer but heavier wheelset. Also, a wider rim will give more support to a wide tire. There will be less "rolling" of the sidewall. |
| re: New Rims | 32seventeen Nov 13, 2003 12:49 PM | | Like the 317disc, now the xc717. The x3.1 is gone as well, it is now the xm819disc. Just the name has changed the rims look the same. Either rim shoud handle your tire choice. Yes, you can run a tube in a tubeless rim. |

| Yep. | SDizzle Nov 13, 2003 2:52 PM | | I ran 2.4 Moto's (BIG tires, though certainly not a 2.6) on my 317s for at least a year, and everything was fine. I just built up some 219s, and I'm quite please with them. They're heavy, stiff, cheap, and will certainly take a beating.
ps. I rode some 2.25 Geax Sedonas for the first time today...BUY THESE TIRES. They're really nice, and huge (though still not a 2.6, as big as my Moto's), grippy (esp on loose-soil corners, and off-camber), light (~680 g)....and I paid a whopping $13 a piece for them! |
