| My new single-speed *street/lock-up/errand* bike | ss-nyc Nov 13, 2003 4:54 AM | | I had an old Motobecane which was bent in half by a NYC taxi when locked up. Then I built a Van Dessel Country Road Bob which was too nice to leave on the street. Then I built an 80s Fuji hybrid frame which was really nice until I took a header into a car going the wrong way on 2nd Avenue in Manhattan. After the hit I decided to treat myslef to a new chrome fork and wheels both which were needed since the old ones were in really bad shape...bent beyond fixing.
My updated 80s Fuji street bike with Coda/Cannondale canti mountain bike levers, Onza grips, Ritchey stem, Sugino 110BCD crank, Sugino Gold 110BCD BMX chainring, Izumi gold track chain, Shimano T519 48 hole touring rims, and Schwinn XS 4x4 48-hole sealed bearing BMX hubs.
As always, thanks to BikeWorks NYC for the great build and service:

| Wow, that's some wild lacing... | mmmatt Nov 13, 2003 5:18 AM | | ...what do you call that?
Cool bike. What's the rear spacing? 130?
Looks pretty tough. |
| Yes it is... | ss-nyc Nov 13, 2003 5:33 AM | | I got the idea here:
http://www.terminalvelocity.demon.co.uk/WheelBuild/
This site shows a 36h "3 leading 3 trailing" design so I just found some parts and asked my LBS to build me a 48h version "4 leading 4 trailing" design.
The hubs are spaced 110mm and could not be respced becasue it is a BMX axle which is 14mm through the body of the hub and then 3/8" where it fits in the frame dropouts. This frame was cold-set smaller to fit the hubs and I have an extra frame in storage just in case this one does not last.
My LBS really helped me with the pricing mostly because they were really excited to build the wheels and I give them a great deal of business. I think any other shop would have made it cost prohibitive to build these wheels. |
| very cool | mmmatt Nov 13, 2003 6:09 AM | | I like it. Just curious, what's the spoke gauge?
It seems like you could add a 3/8 diameter spacer to both sides of the hub axle to get it closer to 130, as long as your chainline was OK. Looks like you got enough threads. Then again, your shop probably thought of this, and maybe there's a reason it wouldn't work. Doesn't matter. Looks good the way it is. |

| Not fixed? | Darwin Nov 13, 2003 7:01 AM | | cool city bike ssnyc. How come it's not fixed? What's the rationale behind the wheel lacing?
I'm debating whether or not to tape up my pista and ride it around as a lock up bike. |
| Nope... | ss-nyc Nov 13, 2003 7:10 AM | | Thanks...
There is no rationale behind the wheel lacing other than I wanted to have something very fun and different. I was thinking of another option known as crow's foot (pic below) but decided on the 4leading-4trailing mostly becasue the shop had never built one and they were going to give me a huge break on the cost. My next set of wheels for my road touring bike will probably be 36h crow's foot.
Everyday Fixed riding in NYC is too much on my young but very worn out knees from too much skiing, soccer, tennis, squash, cycling, etc...
I have a fixed Kogswell but would never leave it anywhere even with the NYC Kryptonite lock. I use it for longer rides.

My Van Dessel Country Road Bob single-speed was "untaped" and will probably be used by my wife. Me on my Kogswell Fixed and she on the CRB when we want to ride out to Coney Island and get an "original" Nathan's frank (hot dog to you).

| Should I risk it? | Darwin Nov 13, 2003 7:54 AM | | Using the pista as a city commuter too and taping it up/chaining the seat/using a krypto NY chain with an ev disc lock?
Or, is it too risky? I think it might be, since I would probably kill someone if my new bike got stolen |
| I would not but that is me... | ss-nyc Nov 13, 2003 8:20 AM | | Many messengers use the same bike as you, tape it up, and lock it up with the same lock so you should be fine but who really knows. I just did not want to take the risk with my Van Dessel so I upgraded its use.
The Kogswell and Van Dessel get brought up and kept in the apartment. The Fuji gets locked up on the street when I use it and locked up in the basement of my building overnight. If the steal/strip it I just do not care. I would be upset about the 48h wheels but I decided before I built them that they may not be mine forever. I am not too worried because it would take forever to steal them; you would need to break the lock, unscrew the bolts, and let the air out of the tires before you could even begin to wiggle them through the calipers. By that time hopefully someone would notice!
If you want a cheap city bike get something from Recycle-A-Bicycle so you just do not have to worry if it gets stolen:
