MY SS Baptism(7 posts)

MY SS BaptismtiSS'er
Nov 13, 2003 9:04 PM
I just finished my ride tonight in the Phoenix desert. I am relatively new to SS'ing, and I love it. I realized the baptism was complete when I waited for a group of full suspension gearies at an intersection. I wanted to know how long it as going to take to pass them. I KNEW i would pass them, just how long? I passed the first on a real rocky down hill, then the rest on the way back up. I could only smile. When at the top I kept going while they stopped to take a break. At that moment I realized that 2 months earlier that was me. I now am a part of the group of people i alway envied because of their strength and ability.
I sold my gearie bike 1 week after I took my maiden voyage upon my SS. I will never ride gears again. There is no better feeling than haviong the most low tech, $300 bike, and be able to smoke super tech, bikes which you need to take out a car loan to afford.
I also have been reading this forum for a while, and there is no other group of people as friendly and as helpful as SS'ers. It seems like gearies are always trying to one-up the other guy "mine is better than yours". SS'ers are truly passionate about biking, not how much more money they spent on their bikes

Thanks for letting me speak my mind, i have never had such a good ride in my life

Cool ain't it? It get's better when you start getting the "Wow! you're one of those singlespeed guys, you guys are nuts". And the SS community is still viewed as small so you'll also get "My friend Jeff rides a SS, maybe you know him?". What trail did your baptism take place? If you ever run into a black Chameleon with one gear and really tired looking rider, stop and say "Hi" ;-)
Where's the Holy SS Water to annoint you?....Ebo

Sounds like an inspirational ride. I also had my first true SS ride today on my converted Stumpy. It wasn't nearly as grand as yours, but I really got a good feeling out of it. Tomorrow will be a bigger ride, maybe some hike a bike, but a great workout and learning experience for sure. Thanks for the write up.
Yup...and the best part? It's quiet.SDizzle

Nice writeup. I recently underwent the same, and won't ever go back to the noise!

great point! I ride in general to temporarily escape the "noise" in my life. Work, bills, schedules, you know the stuff. Riding makes things quiet and it seems to me that the quiet ride on a SS is fairly symbolic of the quiet "ride" I'm looking for in the first place when I hit the dirt. Not sure if that makes any sense to anyone but me but it's what crossed my mind as I sit here at work in front of a bowl of Fruity Pebbles waiting for Mr. Slate to blow the 5 o'clock whistle.

Peace,
Scott

I had a very similiar experience when i first went out on my new conversion. My SS is the only MTB I own now.

I am glad you see the benefits and joy of a SS and I do side with you on "feeling". With that said I have to defend the other side for a moment. To me all bike "types" serve a certain purpose and I try to keep that in mind when I ride my geared full boinger. there are just things I won't do on my SS that I can do on my FS (sizeable drops/jumps etc.) or freeride if you will. Contrarily the SS offers things that the FS can't deliver (passing gearies, smirking at a friend's broken der., quite peaceful ride through the woods) you get my point.
In summary, I personally don't think I could exclusively ride a SS such as you have done, but if your happy I'm happy.
Welcome aboard from a part-time SSer
