It was about this time last year that I took my first offroad ride on my Unibomber. I haven't shifted since. I thought I would tell you one reason why I have no intention of going back...

When I used to ride a geary at least half of my rides were tainted by drive train issues. Occasionally I thought it was me, that I didn't shift right or tune my bike just right. But toward the end of the summer after watching friend break chains, ghost shift, bitch and curse and have a miserable frusting ride all because of drive train issues, I wonder people still ride gears. My good buddy is a mechanic, a good one I presume, his bike usually works perfectly, he use to have to fix mine on occasion. But sure enough two or three times this summer his drivetrain issues really "harshed my mellow" while having an excellent ride. F this, F that, grinding of chains, knees slamming stems. Not pretty.

Thanks to the SS gods for giving my the opportunity to break free of my gears and really dig that knarly singletrack.

***PS: People still ride gears out of habit and fear of change. They put gears on MTBs originally to make the sport more accessible. Experienced riders while most don't need them, keep them just because. Random thought at 2AM.

You said it! After having raced Michigan's "iceman" race last sat. I quite literally passed hundreds of guys who had started in the expert class way ahead of Me, I'm thinking, Why use da' gears? if it works, why complicate it?

and I don't even speak Spanish, your post just got me fired up! NO knock on the gearies becasue I too thought the ss scene was just a fad or some incurable sickness (still not sure on the latter). Even so, I can't see going back to gears off road. I just picked up a roadie to get that fix and I think that makes the likelihood of me having a gear relapse somewhere between zero and none.

Glad you've found bliss man, afterall, it's why we ride in the first place.

Peace,
Scott

Just past my 1 year derailleur-free anniversary a few weeks ago myself. OK, except for BOB trailer trips, but those don't count.
