| What does it take to be a MT. Biker? | Allroy Sep 10, 2001 8:14 AM | | One of the bike porn mags has a section devoted to this, it was pretty interesting and reading MtbIrv's post made me think what does it take to be a Mt. Biker? Do you have to even have to own a mt. bike to be a mt. biker? Is it more of a state of mind? Do you have to love nature, what if you just like to bike? What if you aren't particularly fond of biking, but enjoy nature? Another interesting thought how many people say hi to other on the trail? I'd say 99% of the time I do, but have come across many people that just put their head down and ride by... this is what Mt. Biking is not about, you don't have to sit and chat with the person, even eye contact and a slight nod is all it takes... IMHO Just some random incoherent babble for the day... |
| I rode for 3 years on a "borrowed" bike. | JRinCA Sep 10, 2001 8:26 AM | | I was definitely a mountain biker. Old GT hardtail with the ubrake under the chain stay! Had tons of fun! This is the bike I learned to do the step-over-da-bars dismount when the front wheel twists! |

Anyway, I've never given this subject much thought. I had a teacher in 9th grade who was a hardcore alcoholic (nice segue, eh?) who said that "labels are dangerous because they are too simple". In addition to learning to undo my girlfriend's bra with one hand, it's one of the few things I remember from that year. I consider both to be valuable lessons.

He was a Cutty Sark man.

What does it take to be a mountain biker?
That's a pretty vague question, and judging from the variety of people I've seen and met on the trails in the past 14 years I'd say you'd be pretty hard pressed to come to any sort of concise and conclusive answer. However, I do know of several things that, thank goodness,
will not help you be a mountain biker.
· Britney Spear's latest single
· The abdominalizer
· Televagelists
· Sony Playstation
· A four bedroom house with a white picket fence
· Microsoft's latest web browser
· A bitchin' camaro
· 256MB of RAM
· An eye for fashion
· DVD, MP3, CDRW, HDTV, MSRP, IOU, WTF, SOL.
· A senate majority vote
· Puffing on a phat doobie
· A trust fund
· Male-white-corporate-oppression
· A wicked tattoo
· An excellent golf swing
· Your job
Call me an escapist if you will, but I've always enjoyed mountain biking for what it wasn't just as much as for what it was.
