Can you break a rib without hitting anything?(4 posts)

Can you break a rib without hitting anything?Ska!

I "raced" on Saturday (if you could call it that) and just felt awful out there. It had rained earlier and everything was slick (roots mostly) but the trails weren't bad. I felt really off even on my first loop so after my second I just decided to quit. Something I never do but something just wasn't right.

Here's the story.

First loop, like I said I just felt "off" you know how it is, you get out there and it just feels wrong from the start? Anyway, on the second loop while attempting a sharp left hand turn in a rooty section my front wheel slid out. Now I was moving at a fairly good speed considering the conditions so I was leaning into the turn pushing the limits of grip ;-/ When my wheel slid on the root it wedged itself between two others off to the far side sending me over the bars – sort of. Since I was leaning into the turn I kind of went over only in a weird sideways fashion. My body twisted very oddly and somehow I managed to land on my feet but a massive pain in my lower left rib cage quickly dropped me. I remember thinking I was going to taste breakfast again but then, as quickly as it came, it left. I slowly got back up, unsure, I checked myself over, did a few stretches to see if I was alright and then rode off again. After that loop I thought I'd best quit while I was ahead. I hung around and chatted with everyone and cheered people on as they passed the start finish line. I had no pain or problems at that time and forgot about the incident. Later that night while some friends from out of town dropped by I found myself feeling quite uncomfortable. My chest began to ache and I felt quite stiff. It hurt to take deep breaths or twist my upper body. I shrugged it off and figured I'd sleep it off.

Yesterday I awoke and I was in serious pain. I started to think of the crash but it hurts in a different area (a little higher). Today I'm in worse pain and I hardly slept last night as I just couldn't get comfortable. It really feels like a broken rib! I sneezed this morning and instead of being followed by an "Excuse me." it was followed by an "AHHHHHH!!!!" I'm worried.

I figure it's one of three things. A seriously pulled muscle, pneumonia (which I get now and again and because I had a weird cold a few days ago) or, if it's at all possible, a damn blown rib (the least likely but it sure feels like one – Jesus!)

Ska-aaahhhhh!

Going to the hospital tonight I think. Chest pains suck.

So, is it possible?

between the ribs. I did that once during a coughing attack due to pneumonia. It felt just as bad as a broken rib which I've experienced also.
I hope it's just a torn muscle Ska!kristian

I hope you are feeling better and decide you don't need to go to the hospital tonight, but if you do, be sure to let us know how it went!

Wierd how you landed on your feet.

I've hurt my ribs twice by falling on my side. Both times it was a pretty minor fall. I bruised my rib by fallin on my bent elbow. Amazing how hard and elbow can be when you land on it.

Both times it took about two weeks to heal.
