| Noise from my bike is hurting my PASSION! Please Help!!! | ROCCO Sep 29, 2001 10:22 PM | | I have a 2000 trek STP 400 frame that was built up with an XT crankset front D and splined bottom bracket. For the first month of riding the bike was 100% silent. After that I noticed a ticking noise from the crank/bottom bracket area every once in a while. This has gotten worse over time and now it happens about 80% of the time Im riding. Everytime I turn the cranks under load there is a ticking noise. It is driving me mad. Do any STP owners have this same problem? Any reccomendations? The weird thing is for no reason sometimes the problem just goes away? Is there something I can do with the bottom bracket or maybe replace it? I love the bike but the noise is driving me crazy. Thanks for any help! |

Please Help!!! | warthog Sep 30, 2001 12:29 AM | | Creaks can be hard to locate sometimes, and can seem to be coming from one place, but wind up being caused by something else. The first thing to do is pull your seatpost (because it's the easiest) and wipe it with a rag. Then wipe out the inside of the seat tube, as far down as you can. Coat the inside of the seat tube liberaly with grease and reinstall post. Belive it or not, sometimes seatpost will creak when standing as the frame flexes and rubs the bottom of the post. Next remove BB, and clean inside of frame, slather with grease and reinstall BB, making sure to grease the inside of the adjusting cup. It's ok to grease the splines of spindle also. Other things to check are, the bearing adjustment on your pedals, pedal cages or cleat plates, (Prolink chain lube is good for lubing clipless mechanisim) , cleats, and front derailluer clamps. I hope this helps. Good luck. |

| could it be your front D hitting the crankarm? | mondo Sep 30, 2001 8:27 AM | | also, i check mt xtr crank bolt before every ride. they like
to backout. |
| Front Der, possibly, maybe you're getting stronger. | froggy Sep 30, 2001 10:42 AM | | If it's the front der. cage. you might be getting stronger. That is while you weren't using the large ring much before, you'll be in it more often hence the increased clicking.
Before you rip it apart, work from simplest to easiest.
1) Check the front derailleur cages. Does the clicking happen in all gears. If it happens in all gears is it the tempo you're pedalling or the chain. The rate of clicking will change if it's a stuck link. Ride and listen.
2) Check the saddle. The slight rocking of the saddle could be a click sound.
3) Pull the post, clean and re-lube. Ride and listen
4) Inspect the cranks and pedals. You may have lost a chainring bolt, or have some grit in the pedals.
5) Remove the crank and clean the BB and inside crank, One grain of sand is all it takes.
6) Finally remove the BB if the above hasn't worked (you may neet to buy a BB remover but they're cheap and worth it. Pull it out, remove all the grease in the BB shell, Clean it well with a mild solvent and lube it heavily. Pay close attention to the threads. A small grain of sand or even paintchips are noticeable. GREASE EVERYTHING WELL AND reinstall.
6b)When you're working on the BB flip it over and look for chiped paint (which could be evidence of a crack) or cracks themselves. Flex the frame slightly and with a magnifying glass check the welds, it might be a microscopic crack
The problem with many bikes that adopt a more monocoque build is that the frame resonates. I've ripped my bike apart trying to find creaks in the BB, it was the headset.
My guess is that you should consider 1 and 4 since the problemn isn't always there. You could still be missing a bolt in the middle but because the ring is smaller it won't flex or click.
Good luck. |
| Front Der, possibly, maybe you're getting stronger. | Rocco Sep 30, 2001 8:19 PM | | Id like to thank everyone for their advice so far. im gonna check all of the suggestions out. i have noticed that while in the big ring up front i don't hear the noise as much or at all. im gonna listen closer tomorrow. Does anyone think this might prove something. maybe the noise is from the front d? thanks |
| Here's yer answer... | zilla Sep 30, 2001 11:11 AM | | I have been through the same thing more or less.. Try removing and cleaning the mating faces of your BB then re-install and TIGHTEN it up.. The BB is slightly loose and moving under pressure..
zilla... been there, dun that |
