Me, James, My brother Steve and, Gizmo went for a ride on Tiger Mtn Saturday as we were Loading our bikes we heard a shot like firecrackers. I looked at a rider that was preparing to go out with a bunch of his friends. He had a totlaly disgusted look on his face. and this is how his ride ended before it started. Sorry the pictures are so bad i was using my cheap digi cam and my computer is being a pain so no photo shop

...... - one of the many good reasons to have disc brakes! Better in the parking lot than 10 miles down the trail though.

Though I was able to ride out, but was afraid to use the rear brake.. I heard a noise while riding and checked it out.. Yep, the rear rim was just beginning to seperate.. I rode it out, but walked several steep sections as I was using my front brake only..

The rim came apart -- approximately 35% of the rim peeled away. The guy and his buddy didn't get to ride -- they just packed up and headed home. Probably tried to get "just one more ride" out of the rim.

There are times when using V-brakes are acceptable. The Fox shock on my tracer blew out (under 600 miles) and I had to revert to plan B in this case a Cannondale Raven with Coda disc brakes. Man do those brakes SUCK. Rode with ToddH and GTRider last weekend and all those things did was squeal -- no stopping power at all. Since we were riding @ Victor Falls I just picked the trails where brakes really weren't needed. For the ride yesterday @ Preston Railroad grade I used Avid V-brakes -- much better.

BTW James (AKA GTRider) is developing better skills and stamina -- he had a good ride yesterday. Although he was pissed @ Toddh for passing him going up a hill when Todd was only using one foot to pedal (Todd said his ankle was sore)

In my case, the seperation was caused by the brake pad rubbing on the rim, and the abrasive effect causing a very small portion of the rim to erode.. Over a four year period the accumalation amounted to a thinning of the rim surface.. Eventually the rim begins to seperate..

Mine did this at the Fernie Gathering, the rim wasn't worn through though. I had hit a rock and it folded the rim over, then air pressure took over......scared the hell out of me when it blew, damn it was loud. Still have the rim hanging on my shop wall.
Yikes! Thanks guys... I didn't know that could happen. nmMtbIrv

My rear brake developed an odd thumping. I found what appeared to be a dinged spot on the rim, took the tire off....and the ding disappeared! Put the tire back on, and there was the ding - amazing! When I realized that the rim was so worn that it was flexing from the air pressure in the tire, I took the wheel off and got a new set.

Glad this happened in the parking lot, and no one was injured when it went!
Using pads with them would help. nmBikeWizard

...every 2 or so years.I'm hard on my brakes and even my rims don't manage to split(not from braking, anyway).I agree with the ceramic rim idea--all rims designed for V-brakes should be ceramic! It's worth the extra 10 clams.
