| mt snow gathering | narlus Sep 30, 2001 10:14 AM | | just a real quick note to say big thanks to cush for organizing the event, i had a blast (except @ the end of the riding today, when i discovered a crack/flat spot on my brand new front rim. ugh). saw some folks i'd first met @ the bromont gathering, and a whole slew of jersey boiz as well, and they were great fun.
I have some pics to post, but will get them on in about a week or so, after i get back from germany/ireland.
healing vibes to goatboy.

| re: mt snow gathering | Cheffluffy Sep 30, 2001 2:14 PM | | I second that thanks to cush for Organizing the gatering. I had a Great time, Aside from wiping out hard, and hub problems. I hope I get to ride more next time , but it was fun anyway.
It was Great to meet cush, and the rest of the Gang. Can't wait until next year. (With Disk Brakes) |
| Thank, Cush | Rev Bubba Sep 30, 2001 2:48 PM | | Okay, I didn't make it but I figure I should be nice to you so you organize this again next year when I can attend.

| Some thoughts and pics....... | cush Sep 30, 2001 4:17 PM | | Another gathering has come and gone. This year was as great as ever although we did miss seeing some friends that will hopefully make it next year. Betsy and I drove over Friday evening in time to have dinner at Deacon's Den with a lot of the gang. It was a great to see that we finally talked Chef into driving up! After dinner was a little embarrassing (watching BeeTees try to play pool) and a little scary (thought for sure the first injuries of the weekend would be on the air hockey table.
Saturday morning arrived wrapped in fog but by the time we returned from breakfast at the world famous "Dot's," the fog had lifted. Now that most of the attendees are sporting more than 6" of travel, Dogbert, TinyTank, and myself were the only ones left to do the climbing. We set off for the summit and realized that the trails are very poorly marked. We spent some time pushing out bikes up some areas where we probably should have been on belay. We finally did reach the summit and relaxed for a few photos before beginning out descent. About ¾ of the way down, Dogbert went down and bent the derailleur hanger on his Truth, turning it into a full-suspension single-speed. At the bottom, I decided that my afternoon would be spent on a rented Kona Stinky Five. What a difference from the 1.75 inches I get with the Silk Ti! Many thanks to Chef for warning me not to try bunnyhopping my first time on flat pedals! He and I had 2 great runs including two trips through "Pucker Alley" without any mishaps!
Saturday evening's festivities began with a wine extravaganza courtesy of the Trents and a mini baby shower for Snapdragon and GoatBoy. BeeTee's broke out some great wine and even let us ALL drink it out of his very expensive stemware! Not sure what was in the wine but we saw Sea Otters swimming in the Green Mountains!
We set out for the Dover Forge restaurant for dinner just prior to Vicki knawing my arm off. Sorry, I'll make the reservation earlier next year! Dinner was just as you might expect it would be with a room full of Joisey Boyz. I am sure I will have to use an alias to get a reservation next year! Many thanks for the very generous gift, I promise to post a picture of the new bike parts!
Sunday morning was beautiful and after breakfast I returned to my room to realize that I lost the key to the bike lock. Scary thing was that it took me all of 45 seconds to cut through a ¾" Kryptonite cable with my Park housing cutters. Thanks to Cyberjay for the hacksaw, I needed it to cut through the plastic housing so I could get the cutters around the cable (Erci has the saw because I could not find your van).
Sunday was another XC day for me. It was very special because Betsy joined us making it about the fourth time she has ridden off road. Penguin, Twilight Error, CT in CT, Betsy, and I set out for the "Crosstown" xc area and rode a bunch of fun trails with some of the mud and lots of the roots that New England is known for. CT was sporting her very sweet new Juliana Superlight and did a killer job. Betsy was on her Kona with all of the new parts I put on over the summer. It weighs a lot less than last time she rode. Betsy always surprises me by attempting every obstacle on the trail. I really have to get her out more often.
We did about 7 miles of riding and set out for home... Another great gathering come and gone - so much more than just biking as always. Great to see old friends and make some new ones. I miss you folks already!

| Looks like a great time! | MtbIrv Oct 1, 2001 4:37 AM | | Sorry I couldn't make it. Maybe next year. I'd better start saving now! |
| What I learned at Mt. Snow... | CyberJay Oct 1, 2001 4:29 PM | | I've been meaning to post something.. obviously, thanks cush, nice meeting the people I hadn't met before, and nice seeing friends that I don't get to see very often. The riding was excellent, but hanging out with the group was certainly the highlight.
Several times in my cycling past I have been smacked in the face by facts I did not expect. Last weekend that happened again. After making fun of anyone with a fender on their bike for the past couple years I actually bought one 1/2 way through the day on Saturday. BOY did it make a difference. I felt like such an idiot. So, appologies to anyone I made fun of for having a fender, but you'd better make sure you take it off when it's dry out or I'm gonna be right back at it.
(In case you were wondering, narrow saddles, clipless pedals, and a helmet mounted light in addition of a bar light are the other three things that I resisted for a LONG time only to find out they are very good things.)
Ahh yes.. Mountain Biking.. Where a 15 passenger van doesn't have enough room for three guys and their gear. :)
-Jay |
| Not enough room for three guys and and gear? | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 6:35 PM | | I dunno about that Jay... you skillfully packed us up and even left room for me to stretch out in the back of the van. I gotta get me one of those.
-DOOK! |
| Uh... yeah... we had some stuff.... | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 6:43 PM | | just a bit.... |
| I suppose I'm just a skillful stuff-packer. | CyberJay Oct 4, 2001 12:08 PM | | So maybe I should have said "barely enough room for three guys and their gear." I still bet we could have gotten a fourth in there, but then it would have been slightly uncomfortable. At least I didn't have to use the rack or tow a trailer this trip.
-Jay |
| Many many thanks to cush... | Roß Oct 1, 2001 6:19 PM | | Ah, another year, another great Mt. Snow gathering. Number 3 for me, and for many of the other attendees. It's always wonderful to see the old faces as well as a few new ones each year.
Now, for my standard random Gathering thoughts, as usual...
-This gathering had far less farting than previous gatherings.
-This gathering had far more homosexual events/references than previous gatherings.
-I don't necessarily think the first two thoughts are related, though they might be.
-Luke doesn't snore, but he occasionally yells in Japanese when he's sleeping. Quite unsettling for his unsuspecting roommate (me).
-Fenders are a good thing, as Jay and Mike found out. Unfortunately, I left mine at home. Vermont mud, however, tastes a lot better than New Jersey mud, and that's good.
-8" travel DH bikes definitely have an effect on one's average speed and willingness to do crazy things, including dropping off the Pucker Alley rock.
-I'm very thankful I launched the Pucker Alley rock, since if I had gone home without doing it, I would have been angry with myself. My two main goals for the weekend were to launch that rock and ride up the staircase at the lodge on my hardtail. Check and check.
-Twilight Error looks like a different person every single time I see him. The first time we met, he looked like a 48-year-old. Yesterday, he looked like he was 18. Amazing.
-Smirnoff Ice is very tasty, and apparently hangover-free.
-Luke's camera takes great pictures, as well as video...and it has a 1GB IBM MicroDrive. I need one.
-If the Deacon's Den is still standing next year, I'll be shocked. That place looks like it's ready to implode at any minute.
-Cats which have wheels instead of hind legs are morbidly fascinating. Not as cool as lizards that run on water, though.
-If you're driving on the highway, and a large white Ford passenger van pulls up next to you, stop picking your nose unless you want your picture to be all over the Internet. Mike has a digital camera, and he's not afraid to use it.
-The funniest thing that happened all weekend, IMHO, was when Mike's wife and mother-in-law were looking at the impressive array of electronic gear in Jay's van, and Jay started the van via his remote while they were leaning in the window. I didn't think Heather could jump that high.
-Considering last year's injuries included a broken pelvis and two broken wrists, this year was relatively carnage-free. Sorry to Zaque, who had to spoil the safety record with a broken pinkie on his FIRST RUN OF THE WEEKEND. Bummer. Heal quickly, Daddy.
-I did NOT have sex with that woman. No matter WHAT Brad Trent says.
-Narlus is an amazing rider. I can't wait to see him ride in his own backyard. It was great to meet you, Tim. Good luck to you and Hil on the new family member.
-Cheffluffy learned some things about how to build a bike for a very big rider this weekend. Good 36-hole hubs and disc brakes are critical to a Clydesdale's enjoyment of the weekend.
-Not one Joisey Boy had a major mechanical this weekend. WTF, guys?
-Oops, forgot Dogbert's derailleur/hanger. So much for that idea. We only see him twice a year nowadays, anyway, so I think his membership is up for review at the next board meeting.
-It was good to see Chef this weekend as a last-minute addition, and I'm thankful that Penguin put him up in his room so I didn't get an unexpected (and unwanted) foot massage.
-Where was Kords? Where IS Kords? Anyone? Anyone?
-Happy Birthday to my pal BT. Now tell your wife to tell MY wife to get ME a cool digital camera on my birthday.
Anyway, thanks again to cush for organizing, thanks to Jay for driving (and packing the van), thanks to Mike for not killing me for the comment I made when the doctor was working on his abrasions, and thanks to Crisports for having a 29.4 seatpost in stock at 40% off. I'll see you all next year (hopefully), perhaps with my TWO children (no, it's not twins, for those who care).
|
| Thank GOD for small favors!!! | CT in CT Oct 1, 2001 6:30 PM | | Well, twins ain't exactly a small favor, but you get my drift! Glad to hear you're singular, so to speak...
BeeT's (and he DID have sex with THAT woman, just earlier than he thought he did, I guess!) |
| Hmmmm... | JPÇ Oct 2, 2001 3:41 AM | | ... First of all Thanks Cush ..You da Man. Secondly I'd like to thank Mike for NOT snoring and letting me get some sleep, although I must say that 5am on Sunday morning I woke up to the sounds of snoring AND farting(albeit only for 15 minutes or so), but the rest of the weekend was GAS free, Thanks Mike. It finally felt good to NOT complain about my bike (er..I mean my brakes and/or my tires). I had a blast riding with everyone except Narlus and Erci with whom I only saw at the stops along the way, so I NEVER got to ride with them. Jay/Luke , thanks for hanging with me on the last run on Saturday. It was good to hang with everyone on Fri/Sat night and shoot the breeze. Dogbert/Sharon, it was nice to see you two and ALMOST ride with you. Chef, it was good to see you and ride with you. Also, thanks to Vermont for having everyone and their mother drive a Subaru Outback and to push me to buying a new car. And to everyone else, great to see you. And last but NOT least , thanks to DOTS, Mmmmmmm. |
| We could all tell how excited you were about your bike... | Dookie Oct 2, 2001 11:24 AM | | It was written all over your ... errr.. uhhh.. face? |
| and I thought he was just happy to see me :( (nm) | Erci Oct 2, 2001 11:37 AM | | |
| The Hand | mtgoatboy Oct 2, 2001 4:30 AM | | On Wednesday I go in to have two permenent Ti screws put in my finger, new name-Steve Austin? All is going well, thanks for the vibes Tim. Here is a pix of the finger now, hope to get one with the screws in to post later. Thanks again to Tim for the vibes, to Cush for another great gathering and Brad for the pain killers (wine), Zaque |
| The Hand | Erci Oct 2, 2001 7:11 AM | | Hope everything goes smoothly. Heal fast! |
| re: mt snow gathering | Lt. Oct 2, 2001 6:37 AM | | I guess I'll pile-on to express my gratitude to Cush for doing a superb job once again. "It's been three years and everything works here"... well maybe not my riding. Nonetheless, I had a great time meeting-up with the Boyz et al after numerous cancellations on my part to ride with them. Great to see and hear from the new and improved Dogbert. I was happily suprised to see Chef join us on the Joisey Boyz caravan up to Mt. Snow. Chef, thanks again for noticing that 4 of 6 rear rotor bolts were missing. The other two were very loose. I guess I should be appreciative for the fact that I injured my wrist and decided to sit out a bit while everyone hopped back on the lift. It could've been ugly. Also great meeting with new people. Narlus, is definitely a tremendous rider. I saw him wiz by as I was on the bottom of the mountain. Jaime, I hope you are feeling a lot better after that fall. Damn, I think the howl you let out after might have cracked a few beer stines in Oktoberfest. Zaque, feel better Daddy-O. Odds were gonna get you sooner or later. BeeT's thanks for the wine and your constant reminder for me to get my ass behind the seat. I hope to have some decent pictures soon an look forward to next year. -luke |
| my turn | Erci Oct 2, 2001 7:07 AM | | Cush, thanks for organizing another fantastic gathering. This one truly was about the company. Wish I could see you all more often.
Random stuff:
- It was great to have the lift go all the way to the summit, especially once we figured out how to get all the way down without any climbing :)
- more travel = more speed on DH
- I need more travel :)
- Vermont mud DOES taste better than NJ mud, but it's just as slippery.
- Dot's RULES!
- Luke's camera has twice as much memory as my PC at home.
- Verci loves to pose for the camera.
- I HAVE to get a camera!
And finally...
- do NOT play air hockey with Mike unless you're wearing full body armor and a full face helmet |
| A few words and pics... | Chef Oct 2, 2001 7:51 AM | | I don't think that Cush has been thanked enough, so - thanks, Cush, for putting together another great time up at Snow. Thanks, too, to the people who convinced me to go, and who helped me out when I got there (Twilight Error, Cush, Penguin, Lt, Cyberjay, Roß, Mikey, and anyone else that I don't know about). Extra thanks to Lt for the loan of that Gazzy Jr 2.6 front tire; it really saved my arse. It was GREAT to see everyone there; I don't get to ride with or see you guys much anymore, and it was a real pleasure to try to keep up with you. Hopefully, I can do it again before the next Mt Snow get-together. :-) A few thoughts... - I couldn't ask for a better group of friends than what I have. Thank you, Boyz. - Don't ever play airhockey against Cyberjay, and beat him. He gets nasty. ;-P - a Titus Locomoto, even with a Marzocchi z1cr (in 4" mode) fork and set at 4.75" rear travel, is NOT IN ANY WAY a DH bike. The fact that I not only survived but didn't even crash is incredible. Titus makes a hell of a bike. - Magura Louise brakes are fantastic XC brakes. They have no place on DH. - Bikes need regular maintenance (LUKE). Anyone who ever borrows one of Lt's bikes should remember that. ;-P - It sucks to go from riding a 4" travel bike set up for XC to riding a DTI (or whatever) with a Monster T Triple fork, because you get to see what you're missing... - It sucks even worse to switch back. - I ride XC, not DH. I ride XC, not DH. I ride... Um... XC!! I ride XC!! Damn it. A few pics: Proof that Cush does indeed ride a bike, and can handle 5" front and rear... hehe Here, he blows through the bottom of Pucker Alley.
.jpg)
BeeTee, in all of his fashionably-armored splendor, riding a section that the majority of us walked (I think that Narlus, Goatboy, and BT actually cleaned it). The section in question was full of roots and rocks slick with mud and condensation, and fairly steep and hazardous; even walking it was difficult.

Roß, mid-air, having launched off of the Pucker Alley rock that claimed Capt Caliber last year. Sorry my timing was a bit off...
.jpg)
Narlus, launching the same rock...
.jpg)
Finally, proof that I DID INDEED bottom out my rear shock trying to keep up with these guys on their DH bikes... That brace WAS straight.

Thanks again to Cush and the Boyz, I couldn't have made the trip without you. T |
| Mount Snow 2k1 | Dookie Oct 2, 2001 12:27 PM | | Just a quick note to say thanks to Cush for all of the hard work to make another successful gathering. It was great seeing all of the usual suspects as well as meeting some new folks who will likely become part of the usual suspects for next year.
OK... now for the "What did I learn" part of my post:
-A Maxxis Mobster/High Roller tire combination is no match for slick/wet off camber rocks.
-Falling on slick/wet off camber rocks at a high rate of speed really sucks.
-It is possible to drive from New Jersey to Vermont and still not have enough time to listen to more than one track on any given Dream Theather album
-Shoulder injuries from playing too much air hockey sound cooler if you tell people you got them while biking.
-That's not dirt in the bottom of your glass, it's spooge.
-It is difficult to take pictures of motorists picking their nose on the highway with an inexpensive digital camera
-Farting in a tightly enclosed, wood-paneled alcove makes an interesting sound
-6" of travel is better than 4" of travel... until next year.
-Jaime needs disc brakes. Period.
-Sea otters vacation in Vermont
Special thanks goes to Roach, EVS and SIXSIXONE for keeping me on one piece for another year.
Looking forward to the next one!
-DOOK! (aka /\/\ | K e)

| Da Joisey Boyz have arrived! | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 6:42 PM | | Roll call:
JPC, Chef, Lt, Erci, Roß. and CyberJay.
A frightening bunch. |
| A Panoramic view of Mt Snow | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 6:50 PM | | Looks a little deformed, but hey.... what do you expect? It's not like it was taken with a 4 megapixel camera that plays sound files.... right Luke? |
| Dogbert asks, "Did Brad just say we're drinking spooge?" | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:00 PM | | Here's Brad swirling his glass just after he explained how the little particles of sediment that you sometimes find at the bottom of a glass of wine are called "spooge". |
| "Hi, my name is Vicky, and I'm an alcoholic." | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:05 PM | | Well, not really.... but who can resist having a few glasses from the the wine cellars of the Trent's Connecticut mansion. Vicky is smiling because she has food in her other hand. |
| The Russian Ballerina | Lt. Oct 6, 2001 1:43 PM | | |
| Sunset | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:09 PM | | Saturday evening sunset. |
| 2 fisted drinking? HAH... that's for rookies! | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:11 PM | | How's about FOUR fisted?
Narlus looks on as Chef displays his drinking prowess. Or, his mad recycling skillz. Not quite sure. |
| Rock vs. Hayes | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:16 PM | | Winner? I would call it a draw. The brakes still work fine. The metal is a little sheared. Oh, and my bars were a little bent. But hey, that's what MTB is all about, right? Right? *sigh* |
| What is this thing growing out of the side of my head?! | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:27 PM | | Is it a pic of the nurse from "South Park"? No, it's me with BT slithering his way up along side me to whisper sweet nothings in my ear such as, "Go faster you fat fück". Yeah... I remember that one. |
| Thank to Cush, Penguin, CT and Betsy for the riding | Twilight Error® Oct 2, 2001 1:38 PM | | As has been alluded to, I wasn't in any condition to do a hard ride that weekend so the easy XC spin we did was perfect for what I had to recover from. I had actually considered getting a lift ticket that morning, going up to the top with the Mantra and trying a few runs. Doing so would have been Suicidal. The XC ride we did instead was, even if a bit short, wicked fun. Hopefully next year I'll be able to attend the entire weekend. |
| Where are the rest of the pics?!?!? | CyberJay Oct 3, 2001 8:44 AM | | Dookie, LT, BT, who else had a camera??

| Here.... how bout a pic of the Cyberlimo..... | Dookie Oct 3, 2001 7:18 PM | | I like this one.... Too bad I could not get the driver of the tanker picking his nose in the same frame. THAT would have won me some awards! |

| My pictures... | Lt. Oct 6, 2001 1:58 PM | | Well, being at the back of the pack, riding pics would be limited to rear wheels flinging mud and asses (literally) of those ahead. So, my pics are non-riding related but I hope entertaining nonetheless.
Lifts are so much easier without a snowboard on my feet. |

| Great pics narlus! But a question..... | Stine Oct 10, 2001 7:07 PM | | I don't think I could ride that doo doo.
;)
Who am I kidding. I KNOW I couldn't ride that stuff! hehe
Does anyone have any pictures of the XC trails? I'd really like to try to make it next year, but need something a little tamer than I've seen in the pictures. |
| The XC trails are nice. | Shiva Oct 11, 2001 8:45 AM | | You can see a few shots of them towards the bottom of this page: http://jburtner.tripod.com/mountsnow/index.html
See you there next year?
Shiv |
| awwwww ya! That's more like it! | Stine Oct 11, 2001 6:39 PM | | Looks cool.
We'll try to make it. It depends on many things, but I will definitely mark our calendar!
Would be cool to finally meet you.
:) |
| Steeeeen... | Roß Oct 11, 2001 9:25 AM | | Check the threads from the old Mt. Snow trips from the past two years. There are some pics of the XC trails there. Most of the mountain is rideable by someone with intermediate ability; the pics were taken on some of the rougher stuff there (no point taking pics on the easy stuff, is there?). ;-) |
| Will do! (nm) | Stine Oct 11, 2001 6:36 PM | | nm |
| Not to mention that... | Brad Trent Oct 11, 2001 9:04 PM | | ...Roß was SERIOUSLY hamming it up for the camera when these pics were taken!!! REALLY! He had his ass hanging SOOOOOO far behind his saddle for NO good reason other than to make a moderately iffy trail look HARD-CORE!
Snow is CAKE...ya gotta come...just bring the Godamned Roach® Pads!!!
BeeT's |
| hahahahaha! Don't worry | Stine Oct 12, 2001 4:47 AM | | I learned a big lesson at Thorpe. I wear them all the time now.
(and I can get my ass back for the camera with the best of them)
(omg... just realized I'm laughing! feels good) |
| Naaah... | Roß Oct 12, 2001 5:07 AM | | I didn't want to make the TRAIL look hard-core, I wanted to make ME look hard-core!
Did it work? :) |
