Chainsuck with Sugino chainring(9 posts)

Chainsuck with Sugino chainringjonny boy

I have '98 LX cranks. 8 spd, 5 arm. Not the easiest thing to find replacement chainrings for. Anyways, went to Performance the other day and they sold me a Sugino 5 arm chainring. Seemed to fit on correctly. On the ride Saturday, however, chainsuck going from middle to small chainring. Just eyeballing there is more distance between middle and small than between big and middle, enough that in the transition the chain got lodged between the middle and small. Ouch!

My question: can this be solved by putting washers behind the ring nuts, such that it pushes the whole chainring further inward? This is kind of hard to explain, a picture is needed. Basically the 5 bolts screw into these 5 nuts, and it appears you can place some sort of spacer between the nut and the ring, and therefore the ring would be offset when the bolt is screwed in.

Or I can just return the chainring and try to find an LX.

Thanks!
Return it...Rock

I'd return it to the retailer. They told you it would work/fit, and it doesn't. Trying to rig it somehow will only cause problems down the road (trail).

Ride on Saturday was good. You da' man for clearing Dave's rock garden. I felt alittle off form so I decided not to try. Sorry you had to bail early, but I'm glad you had a good time at the concert.

It's not on backwards is it?kristian

That's the only thing I can think of. If turning it around doesn't help, take it back. Good luck!

Actually, it was the first chainring installation I've done, so there is that possibility. But another rider looked and agreed it was not on backwards. Good thought though...
LOL! Sorry, It's something I would dokristian

In fact I'm trying to think if I ever have actually done it--I can't remember for sure either way.

The four of us should get together for a ride sometime before the snow falls.

Boy did we get to ride some fun stuff that Js discovered. There were some kickbutt DH sections that you would love. You really should get up here before it gets cold.

I believe there are numerous pictures from Saturday's ride about to surface.

I wish I had brought my cam that day :(

Yeah, I'd try and return it. They told you it would work, so hold em to it. :)

Good ridin with ya on Sat. We're gonna have to get up there again before it gets cold. Those trails are a hoot! I'm looking forward to the ride thread later today.

Which ring(s) did you replace?mtncranker

Some original rings/crankarm combos have some rings milled out where they contact the crankarm, presumably for spacing issues. Do you still have the original so you can check the original spacing? If so, you can perhaps use spacers to match it. But if it becomes a question of grinding off the side of the chainring, return it!
Thanks everybodyjonny boy

Since they didn't have any 8 spd chainrings, I tried spacers. This did set the offset between rings correctly, but then the chain was rubbing on the ramps of the middle chainring, while in the small. Oh well.

Talking to Rock, I might just get new cranks. He recommends Deore, cause their cheap, and non-splined. Otherwise, LX would require a new bottom bracket as well.
