A first, a last.(7 posts)

A first, a last.Goat

Well, last night was both a first and a last. My first night ride with my new light. My last ride on the I-Drive. My first ride with some of the group. I also traded bikes for a brief time with a friend who just bought a new Klein Attitude Comp hardtail. Man, that is a pretty sweet ride. I think I need a nice hardtail, too.

We rode the wet, leafy trails like a bunch of kids, our various styles of lights bobbing and weaving along. At one point some of the guys announced that they were bailing. I was feeling a little whipped, but decided to hang. Gotta build my skills...especially climbing and handling skills. Besides, I reasoned, this being my first night ride I need to set the proper precedent for the future. Can't have the family expecting me back too early. And I like to hang with the big dawgs...the hard core...even if I struggle to keep from being dropped too far off the back. I figure it will come back to me someday.

The ride culminated in one last climb up out of the woods to a paved, downhill road where the others promptly took off, sailing as fast as they could. One of us was still fidgeting when the rest of us pulled out. I looked back part way down the hill. No lights coming, so I slowed and was thinking about stopping to be sure he was OK when he flies by me with no lights! Argh! Now I'm playing catch up! I started out tentative on the long, dark hill, but once I got confident I started letting the bike go. I'm starting to like that feeling of flying down a back road. I hit 38.2 mph. A record for the mtb.

I arrived home and put the I-Drive in the garage for the last time. Today I'll take it to the shop where the NRS will be built up for me. I'll miss the bike, but am excited about basically getting a new bike again. When I walked into the lights of the kitchen I looked at my bare legs and took in the carnage. Mud, chunks of leaves and other unidentified debris all over me. I took a hot shower and settled in. I was SO psyched about the ride that I didn't get to sleep until midnight...a couple hours after my normal bed time. Today I'm still stoked. I love my bikes.
enjoy the NRSDoc

The NRS is sure nice. Turns out mine (frame) didn't sell on e-bay. So, I'll be keeping her and trying to build her back up slowly, very slowly.

I'll give you a few tips: When I got mine it took forever to get the rear shock set up right. I finally called Giant and this is what they told me. Set the rear positive chamber at 15lbs OVER you riding weight. (include camelbak, shoes, etc....) and set the negative chamber at 50. Never anything other than 50 in the negative chamber.

If you do that you'll have the bike the NRS is supposed to be. It'll also be a LOT firmer than your I drive. Some people don't like a FS bike to be so firm, so you might end up dropping your + chamber PSI a little, but you'll get pedal feedback if you drop it too much.

Enjoy!
Thanks, Doc.Goat

Your setup tips are right in line with everything I'm hearing. I rode with a guy last night that got an NRS XTC Air to replace his I-Drive. His is a little older and the drop outs are designed in such a way that the derailleus slaps it continuously. He wants to get a rear triangle of the new design, but otherwise seemed happy with the bike. Thanks, and I'm sure I'll be posting about the NRS real soon.

What you do is go to the hardware store and buy some of that brown felt weather striping. but a 4" piece on the underside of that nasty slap happy chainstay and Viola'! fixed. This is what giant basically did for the 2001 models. For the 2002 year the redesigned this area and it isn't a problem anymore.
Nice post....................1WD
