Headed to a buddy's place near Front Royal/Strasburg for some weekend camping and I was wondering what are some good nearby trails?

Bueller? Anyone?

Just a little ways down from front Royal is the Camp Roosevelt Trailhead. There are all kinds of good things rocky and fun. I have the mountain bike Va guide with all the trail descriptions--they are great and right on about all the rides in the area. Getcha one a them booklets and go have a blast!

There is always Elizabeth Furnace! Was just there last night :) 6 - 9:30pm, of course it is a "day use" area only - doh.

EF is directly between FR and Strasburg. From Signal Knob last night we could see FR, Strasburg, Winchester and Woodstock.

Elizabeth Furnace is the bomb-diggity. Mellow climbing (except for the mile long hike-a-bike), and one awesome downhill. See if you can get your hands on Mountain Bike Virginia book. It gives a pretty detailed version of the route.

I've been wanting to ride there for a while. I'll have a couple intermediate level riders with me. Is EF over their heads?

Depends largely on route.

The infamous "Bear Wallow" trail may be too much for intermediate riders.

Most folks start up this trail from Fort Valley Rd and then cut over to the fire roads for the remainder of the climb, others start at the next parking lot down Ft Valley and take the fire road the whole way.

Either way, you still go through "Mudhole Gap" which is pretty rocky and challenging especially with all of the leaves down right now! It goes like this...cross a creek, hit the rocks and leaves with wet tires...repeat 4 times.

Coming back down there are options too. Most do the "hike-a-bike" up and over the ridge, and down Bear Wallow. Others may come back the way the came up i.e. fireroads through Mudhole Gap.

The real fun and challenge is getting to the top of the ridge and coming down Bear Wallow, but it aint for sissies.

peace
