Another collarbone bites the dust(6 posts)

Phooey! So much for riding this Fall.

Just a quick dab of the brakes to check some speed as I neared the edge of the 4 foot drop turned into a small rear wheel skid on the rock scree. So what was to be my well timed tug on the bars to loft the front end, ended up being too little too late. So one second there wasn't nearly enough gravity, and the next there was way, way too much.

Unsalvagable nose down attitude, flat bottom approaching fast. My hope that the fork would soak it up was short lived as inertia had other plans for me. I hit hard, right on my noggin and shoulder. My Giro helmet sacrificing itself completely. I'll be investigating if they have a policy similar to Bell where you can send in the used helmet for a lower cost replacement unit.

I knew the clavicle was fragged before I even got up. There's this sick unique pain associated with skeletal injury that you just don't experience with anything else. Thankfully, it wasn't too far of a walk out. I had to get some help loading the bike into the truck, as the clean and jerk over the bed rail wasn't gonna happen.

I've got this spectacular scrape right where the compression brace wraps around my shoulder. The pressure and friction on this is worse than the break. Yeooowch! I've got about 3-4 weeks before light physio and maybe 8 to 10 weeks 'off-bike'.

So besides some initial discomfort, and a limited range-of-motion once healed. What nastiness awaits me as I contemplate getting back in the saddle next Spring-ish?

At least you didn't do it at the beginning of the season.

Get well, and good luck

As one who is still in the recovery phase of my shoulder injury I can somewhat sympathize. I was lucky enough to have just separated the clavical from the sholder area instead of breaking it, hence I was only off the bike for 4 weeks.

I would suggest keeping your cardio work going by either walking or riding a trainer, though sitting up on a trainer for long durations really sucks.

Good luck with the rehab and take it easy for a while. By the way, adding new parts to your bike in the time off is fun and makes you want to get on the bike much too soon.

forget the Giro replacement. It's a joke. They'll give you like 10% off if you send your old helmet to them with a letter explaining what happened.

Big hairy deal.

I found one for 15.00 less than they were offering and got it in 2 days.

Hope you feel better soon.

For me, it wasn't so much the collarbone break as it was the soft tissue injury to my shoulder that bothered me later (rotator cuff stuff?). Never was diagnosed, and I didn't do enough physical therapy to fully re-strengthen it, so I think thats why it still bothers me some. The old fracture occasionally feels a bit funny and will bug me a bit every now and then, but no biggie.

mine still occasionally bothers me after a couple years! And mine was diagnosed right away. Not bad enough for surgery, but had lots of physical therapy. You're right. Soft tissue injuries near joints are a pain for a long time.
