Oct 25, 2001 9:29 PM
The Keiwa valley has some of the nicest riding in victoria. We stayed in a hotel in bright. There is a really good bike shop on the way in, the owner is this guy with a canadian accent. Big him for awhile and he will take you out riding. We also did some night rides which were really good, along the main river which runs through bright (forgot the name). Shoot me an email if you want technical details on any of the rides, or call the canadian guy at the shop.

Oct 25, 2001 9:57 PM
You sure thats Buffalo & not Mt Bogong, Keiwa valley.? Looking northish from the lookout near Tawonga Sth.?

I rode over Mt Bogong a few years ago, before the park service let us know it's against the rules! A long push up Quartz ridge to come down Eskdale spur. Very rocky in the upper part & a hoot once past mitchel refuge. Now no-go for the MTB but heaven-on-a-stick for Tele skiing in winter.

Steve
hmmmm probably rightBigAl
Oct 25, 2001 11:48 PM
You sound like you know the region much better than me. I just did day rides out of bright. I couldnt remember the exact location but I had a feeling it was mt buffalo. Thats the problem with digital camera's, you cant write stuff on the back of the pic :)

Those pix looks like the Arroyo Seco Trail that follow the stream up toward Schwitzer Falls in Altadena (north of Pasadena). Am I right? That water bar looks awefully familiar, as does that water fall.

I hope that you and Chris are around here again in the future. I'd love to ride that trail with you guys.

Take care,

Herb
I think that's the place!Stine
Oct 26, 2001 6:33 AM
But O'Pher rode it all by his lonesome. The guy he talked to about it said it was not good for a beginner type like myself at the time. And from the looks of the pics (I don't like cliff's!) I think I'd still have to pass.

I did ride ElMoro (mostly over my head). And rode up and down Latuna, and also rode Chino Hills which I liked better than ElMoro.

I can't climb for poop, and the climbs there in CA killed me! hehe

Loved the weather, but missed the tree covered smooth singletrack that we have here.
The Gabrielino Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains (Pics)JT
Oct 26, 2001 7:50 AM
That's the Gabrielino trail, which starts up at a place called Red Box near Mt. Wilson; it's a 15-mile mostly downhill single track, with one little climb but lots of little ups and downs.

It can be ridden 2 ways, 1. Shuttle, 2. Climbing up Mt. Lowe railway or Mt. Wilson, which are both around 9-10 miles and @ 4500 feet.

The Gab is most spectacular in the fall, with the leaves changing color, it fools you in thinking you're not in So. Cal. for a moment.

I don't know if I would consider it an advanced trail; accept for the exposure, narrowness and the looseness of the trail.

Your friend must of taken those pictures a while ago, there are no waterfalls that big anymore due to lack of rain we've had last 2-3 years, maybe he was there in 98 right after El Nino.

Here are some pics of a friend of mine and I when we rode it last around this time in October.

"Exposure"! That's the word I was looking for...Stine
Oct 26, 2001 8:03 AM
like in your last pic. That kind of thing freaks me out because I am afraid of heights.

And yes, hubby and I were there right after El Nino.

I thought he told me it was Allroyo (sp)... oh well. A guy at a shop gave him directions and he went. I think I remember it as being north of like Glendale or LaCresenta maybe somewhere (?)
"Exposure"! That's the word I was looking for...JT
Oct 26, 2001 9:58 AM
It does run parallel and through the Arroyo aka Arroyo Seco, the first 10-12 miles are all the Gab. trail, then you drop into the arroyo seco canyon and ride that all the way to JPL in Atadena / Pasadena.

I live in Altadena so I know the area quite well.

He went at a time where our trails were in the worst shape they've been in in years, thanks to mother nature, God knows we sure needed the water and it changed all trails permanetly (for the better).
JPL.... sounds familiarStine

Oct 26, 2001 1:04 AM
Coming towards the camera it gets very dusty and steep. I've tried it many many times and have only made it 3 times all the way. Twice about 8 years ago on my heavy fully rigid Diamond Back Topanga, and on the one attempt this summer mid way through my road trip. Felt great to master El Moro, given that it was the first place I ever MTBed (and I've ridden there at least once a year for the last 13 years).

Thanks for allowing me to reminisce.
Tell me about it!Stine
Oct 26, 2001 3:05 AM
I think our guide thought it was my speed. I did ride down from where that pic was taken though. What a rush, but I think I walked half of the rest of El Moro. Of course I wasn't as good of a rider as now (I know, hard to believe..lol)

What made it even worse is that it was right after El Nino (?) and there was a LOT of damage. In this pic we had to get across this cave in by dropping the bikes down by hand, climb over and across the bottom and crawl and hand the bikes back up on the other side.

This was also the ride that I could have SWORN I was being followed by a big cat at one point.

Oh, and this picture is of me freaking out walking along a huge crack in the earth. The guys just rode along the edge. I just couldn't! (this was right after the cat thing)

And.... we saw this sign as we came OUT of this part of the trail.

Tell me something I didn't know! hahaha

This summer it was as easy as I've ever seen it, with many of the harder sections having been sanitised and the singletrack destroyed by reckless and inconsiderate tossers. Very sad.

The photo of Francis, one of my absolute favorites, was taken at a local area that I hate, Fremont Older. It's dusty, mostly steep fireroads, too crowded, and there are rangers with radar. But that evening everything came together for a great picture. I'm sure the same thing will happen for you if you carry a camera with you while you ride. Good photos are about seeing and persistence, not location - although a dramatic location can't hurt :-)

That little stick looks like sabotage to me. That looks like it hurt.

Did I ever tell you my Galbraith story (10 times?)...

I cisited my friend on Whidbey and we got word of Galbraith. He'd moved up from the Bay Area to go to Western Washington and didn't really have any friends. So we go to Galbraith with no guide and ride all over those syupid logging roads for hours. We fund a couple little trails between the roads, but nothing to justify 20 miles of fire road riding. The we rode that trail across the highway and it was sweet:-)

I need to go back.
