| Disc mount question | Noah Nov 26, 2001 6:43 PM | | Yes, I know, this is the wrong place to post this, but I would like some answers tonight so I'm going with the most visited board. My new Klein '99 Adroit frame has the Hayes flat mounts on the chainstay- two holes with a flat section in between. I'm wondering if anyone knows of an adapter that would allow me to use this mount with other brakes besides Hayes- preferably an Avid CPS brake. If you have any ideas, please let me know where I can get this adapter and about ho wmuch it will cost me. Thanks a lot- Oh, and does anyone want to buy a Chris King/Mavic 217 front wheel? $70, let me know. oops, there goes $3... Noah |
| I don't think so | Pat T.® Nov 26, 2001 7:21 PM | | Reason being that the caliper would not clear the seat stay with the addition of an adapter. That and to run an I/S caliper in that position you'd have to run it almost 120-130deg from normal. That also makes line routing iffy at best. |
| re: Disc mount question | Brakemeister Nov 26, 2001 7:51 PM | | there was a thingy listed from Shimano in the Quality Bicycle Parts catalog the last 2 years.
I actually asked Shimano to send me one, in order to try out ( yeah that never happened )
anyhow I never saw that gizmo..... it might be tough depending on clearance between the stays ...
( You have NO idea how i talked to the trek guys to put IS standard on the frames .... unbelievable )
Quality sells to dealers only, so u have to ask your dealer to get one of those for you

| Thanks... | Noah Nov 26, 2001 9:06 PM | | I work for a shop, so I'll check it out and see if I can order one. I appreciate the help. Noah |
| It will not work | shiggy©® Nov 26, 2001 9:35 PM | | Noah, there is not enough room in the rear triangle for both the adaptor and the Avid disc. Sorry.
You might be able to use a Hammerhead adaptor. |
| Nope... | Noah Nov 26, 2001 10:07 PM | | I've got funky micro-dropouts, so there's no option of that. Thanks- it's too bad, I could have gotten a pair of Rolf Urracco Disks for $200 through our Trek distributor. Oh, well... Arch rivals it is for the rear. Noah |
| Duh.....I forgot | Pat T.® Nov 27, 2001 3:03 AM | | You could use a Brake Therapy...completely forgot about that, since it doesn't bolt to the 22mm mount or to your drop out you may be in luck.....worth a look anyways. But and front Avid and rear V isn't a bad option, I ran a front Louise and rear HS-33 and it worked great. And going with that set up your levers will still be the same if that matters to you. |
| Or Magura HS-33 for almost disk brake power. (nm) | CraigH Nov 27, 2001 9:03 AM | | nm |
| I've got an adapter that will solve your problem | Twilight Error® Nov 27, 2001 9:28 AM | | Like your Adroit, my Mantra had the Hayes 22mm mount. I wasn't all that impressed with the way Hayes brakes felt, and I couldn't find an aftermarket adapter that fit in the tiny junction at the dropout, so I decided to make an adapter that allowed me to mount the Louise on my frame. Its carved out of a piece of 304 Stainless Steel angle, all done freehand with a hacksaw, drill press, hand file, 1/4" die grinder and LOTS of patience. Judging by the wear marks in the rotor, I was getting 2/3 pad contact on both sides - not perfect but still pretty good considering its mounted well off the angle its designed for. If I had a pair of shallower-head bolts securing it to the chainstay, It could have been moved further back into the dropout junction which would give me full pad contact. All the holes are drilled slightly oversize so I can fine tune its postion.Cable routing was also a problem, I made a guard from a piece of MX fender and ziptied that to the chain and seatstays. It was positioned so that if the bike was dropped, it would protect the caliper and fitting. The rotor was mounted on a '00 Louise Pro hub, the caliper also being a '00. The piece is very well tested, In all the rides I used it there wasn't any problem with strange noises or the adapter coming out of position. I'm not needing it anymore because the Adept Klein sent to replace the Mantra uses a universal fitting to attach an I.S. mount. If you want the adapter, let me know. I'm going to use the caliper and hub on the adept when I finally get back on my feet. |
