MAGAZINES- WHACHOOWANT???pigfooker

So I followed this mtbr thread yesterday about how much MB mag sucks.

I totally agree, and I asked everyone what they wanted to see out of a mag.

I mean, I know what I want, but sometimes it seems like it's the same old thing.

Since I only got one person to respond, I'm gonna try again.

SO Let's try again- "WHAt do you want to see out of a mtb magazine?"

More honest reviews and comparisons of $400-900 bikes (where the majority of mountain bikes are purchased). Fewer advertisements. More travel features. More photos. Cheaper prices to subscribe.
Basically I want more for less, but we all know that's impossible. So I'll settle for the first one.

It's always fun to see the great photo's, but it seems whenever I recognize an area, it's in an illegal area-that sucks!

I would like to see more how to's. The only problem is that they need to be soo specific to each item. For example the Marz x-fly 100, seems to have its own manual vs the Marz Marathon. What is in it for the mag if it has lost so many viewers because viewers don't have the exact fork? I hope that came out right.

I think it was Mountain Bike Action that came out with the shop rides per location. That was pretty cool.

I would like to see more new and upcoming manufacturers. Everyone already knows about the Treks and Specialized bikes. They already make a boat load of money, help out the little guys.

Reviews and articles like Dirt Rag and pictures like Bike has...Merge these two magazines together and you have a great combination.

Actually I subscribe to Mountain Bike... For me, it seems like the best compromise between all the magazines out there. The regional reports from around the US are interesting and sometimes the articles are okay. I can deal with poor quality paper... The last issue was pretty skimpy though.

I always like to read reviews and tests on the latest products and innovations (i.e. Stans Tubeless). Race information is cool (I would like a little more on different styles of racing - cyclocross, 24 hr races, bikercross, etc.). More shootouts between similar bikes (example - Bullit vs. Joker).

Literate writing (see Dirt Rag)

Lots of bike reviews - I like to read technical reviews about bikes and I want the reviewer to include an accurate weight of every bike reviewed. I am not a weight weenie but want some guidance in this area that I can trust.

Quality construction (see Dirt Rag)

An issue every month. Just because I'm not riding in the winter, it does not mean I've lost interest.

Product reviews (besides bikes)

Less editorial content. I could care less what Zap feels is bugging him this month.

Less race coverage. I'm just not interested.

Lifestyle coverage such as festivals and things like that. Don't mind the occassional beer/book/record review either.

Details on what is going on in the industry. Why did Schwinn/GT fail, who is next, who is strong.

Avocacy(sp?) coverage.

Guess I'm looking for an expanded version of Dirt Rag.

Enough?
Is that you, Zap?Finch Platte

Anyway-

Nicer, thicker paper. More pics. Maybe more input from readers, pics and stories/reviews (they may have fresh insight on stale topics- see Dirt Rag). Get rid of some of them corporate lackeys and hire people who

i ride!

Local trail info/maps. Commuting info, how to depend on cars less. What cars are doing to us, as far as killing us and our planet. Grassroots stuff- how to put on your own race, how to organize a club and keep folks interested.

Make the layouts a little less cluttered- take a look at Bike mag- they aren't afraid to let a little space show thru on a page. You don't have to fill every single inch of a page with info.

We're not all racers- we're not all rich- we're not all stupid. Don't write to us like we are. Get rid of that damn "service charge" for "delivery". Beer reviews, wine reviews, new food discoveries. There's other food besides burritos, burgers and pizza. Try Greek!

More do-it-yourself fixes. I just posted in Tech talk asking where I can get a 'nard guard'. A guy responded- make one out of pipe insulation & zip ties. Works for me....

That's all I can think of at the moment- I need a commute to clear my head.

Good luck, stranger.

I must agree that I'd like to get more "user friendly" info in one rag. Maybe combine Dirt Rag and Bike. Good product reviews that are not influenced by Corp. sponsers. Aim at the average rider. Bring the prices down? (yea, right)

Trying to decide whether to renew my Dirt Rag scrip. If it weren't for the Old Coot column, which is an annoying waste of space, I would.

He writes bullshit articles in an annoying made-up dialect. Why write crap when there are actual facts and a whole intersting world called science? I'd like to see more science brought in to MTB magazines--both health and diet and exercise physiology, as well as physics and chemistry, interesting things about the way our bikes and bodies are made and how they operate. That old coot is useless and he's totally full of it.

I agree (re/ Old Coot). Very annoying. Talks a lot but doesn't say much.

About the other stuff you mentioned- heh! I'd like to see "exercise physiology, as well as physics and chemistry" in Dirt Rag!

Look at any climbing magazines. The difference is huge. I know that they are two different sports. Bike magazines could learn alot from them.
