Cycling Can Improve Sex, Italian Study Shows
ANAHEIM, CA (BRAIN)Finally, someone is telling the world what we already know--cycling can improve sexual performance. According to a report filed by the Associated Press, a new Italian study showed that riding a bike may work as a substitute for Viagra in some men with weak heart muscles.
The men in the study reported improvements in their sex lives after riding at a moderate intensity three times a week for eight weeks. "It's a simple exercise you can use to improve your sexual function," said Dr. Romualdo Belardinelli, director of the Lancisi Heart Institute in Ancona, Italy. He reported his findings Nov. 12 at an American Heart Association conference in Anaheim.
Belardinelli looked at patients with chronic heart failure, a condition that makes the heart muscle so weak that it is unable to pump blood well. Aerobic exercise may be most valuable for men on medications that when combined with Viagra could be fatal.
In the study, 30 men exercised at a moderate intensity. Another 29 men did not exercise and served as a comparison group. Researchers watched the first group's ability to use oxygen rise as a result of exercise. They also saw blood flow improve in the brachial artery, which runs from the shoulder to the elbow. The control group did not experience such changes.
The men responded to questionnaires, as did their sex partners. The results were compared to make sure the men were telling the truth. The results showed the men who exercised had better erections as well as improved quality time with their partners.
