| NRR Video for rally fans/car nuts... | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 8:44 AM | | For an amateur video compilation (it was done by a Montreal Subaru club member), this one came out rather well:

| Cool! | kristian Nov 27, 2001 8:52 AM | | I love the flying Subaru! (as opposed to the flipping Subaru... ;)
Gotta love Rally!!! |
| re: NRR Video for rally fans/car nuts... | Utom511 Nov 27, 2001 8:53 AM | | Off topic..........But I love it! |
| This ought to help... | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 8:56 AM | | Many of the cars pictured here are Subarus, and Subaru is a great sponsor of IMBA. So there's some MTB content ... in a sort of six-degrees-of-Kevin-Bacony way ;-) |
| Dave, did you make the rally a few weeks ago in azusa? | JRinCA Nov 27, 2001 9:00 AM | | The bro and I went over for a look. Not much Rallying going on. Cool video! |
| Dave, did you make the rally a few weeks ago in azusa? | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 9:19 AM | | Yeah!
We left the hotel area around 11:30 to be guided up into the hills to watch the stages. The guy guiding us was a local SCCA rep in a Mazda 323GTX who usually races these things. Needless to say I drove the WRX like I was IN the rally just to try to keep up with the guy. We (18 Subarus chasing a Mazda) actually passed one of the rally cars on an asphalt transfer late in the day.

NKT (waiting for snow and move to Montana to try out his new Subaru!) |

| Amateur?! I think not | radair Nov 27, 2001 10:49 AM | | That was very, very cool. I haven't seen too many amateur videos where there's helicopter shots, etc. Most excellent!! |
| Amateur?! I think not -- Well... | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 11:04 AM | | The footage is from Speedvion's coverage of the WRC season. But the guy edited it and put it to music, and did a damn fine job if you ask me. |
| Very cool. Someone PLEASE explain something to me.... | Stine Nov 27, 2001 11:01 AM | | I would try that in a heart beat. Why is it that I am afraid to go down a stupid little technical downhill on my bike, but picturing myself driving like that does not?? What's up with that?
Even getting air like that. (which would scare the crap right out of me on a bike and I wouldn't even THINK of trying it)
Most MTB videos always make my hands sweat. This video just made me want to go out and rally.
I'm stumped.
I love driving. Hubby and friends have always said I should try it someday. I've just never had a car that would stand up to it.
Maybe when I get my 911. |
| False sense of security | Chip Nov 27, 2001 11:15 AM | | You're probably viewing the front/back/sides/roof as some sort of super armor that will prevent you from getting hurt like you would on a bike.
Another reason might be experience. I'm guessing that you've put a bit more time behind the wheel than in the saddle.
You didn't say it had to be a good explanation.
-C |
| I think you're on to something with....... | Stine Nov 27, 2001 11:22 AM | | the experience idea. Now that makes sense.
I don't know about the false sense of security though. I'd much rather have a crash with a large helmet around my whole body I think.
And the 5 point seat belt system and roll bars wouldn't hurt either. |
| Reality check: | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 11:29 AM | | The forces involved in auto accidents are orders of magnitude greater than those inloved in most MTB crashes.
It's a false sense of security because even with roll cage, harness helmet, etc. you can still get messed up (soft tissue/neck injuries especially) in relatively slow speed incidents.
Pete |
| Exactly | Chip Nov 27, 2001 11:33 AM | | Just ask #3, not that he was going slow.
Glad to see you survived going around and around in the rain.
-C |
| Reality. | Pete. Nov 24, 2001 2:59 PM | | Example:
While going around and around in the rain someone spun off into a "soft" tire wall at 35 mph, crumpled the front and hood of their C5 Vette, no air bags deployed and they walked away (after being towed from the mud).
He has whiplash and neck problems three days later because his head, weighted by his helmet, was thrown forward when he impacted the wall.
A relatively slow speed mistake but he's going to be hurting for a while.
Going fast in cars is dangerous enough in a controlled environment like a track. Rally driving is way, way more dangerous.

| Track drivers aren't required to use HANS devices? (nm) | Twilight Error® Nov 27, 2001 12:15 PM | | |
| Heck no. | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 12:21 PM | | You don't even have to have a cage or harness to drive on a track.
Pete |
| So I could take my Dak to a track | Twilight Error® Nov 27, 2001 4:24 PM | | and spend the entire time getting lapped? So am I right in thinking all the safety equipment required to drive at a track is what coms standard in the vehicle? |
| It varies. | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 5:09 PM | | If you are doing many open lapping or HPDE events you typically have to pass a tech inspection to insure that the car is running properly and that you have an approved helmet.
From there, some groups require a fire extinguisher, harness, cage (depending upon vehicle), fuel cell, etc., etc.
Pete |
| I thought so. | Twilight Error® Nov 28, 2001 5:45 AM | | I think I'd feel a lot more comfortable on a track with a harness, cage and fuel cell than in a stock vehicle. I image having a pack of skilled drivers around you is the best safety device anyhow. Back in my mudding days I used to wear a MX helmet while driving. I've recovered too many flipped jeeps and trucks not to take that precaution. Someday I think I'm going to have to give track driving a try, but not in my truck - I'd actually pose a hazard to everyone else out there - 4wd pickup trucks aren't made for running at 125mph (mine isn't at least)... Have you seen, BTW, the new Bugatti? Its supposed to get 1004 horses from a V16 motor, I don't know the torque spec, top speed is somewhere in the 300mph range. I think I could have a bit of fun slinging that around a track... Price? Around $800,000. |
| Of course you are right, and that is why | Stine Nov 27, 2001 11:39 AM | | I was asking why the bigger fear with the biking.
I think Chip was right when he said I just feel more confident driving a car than riding a bike because I have way more experience with them.
I really need to ride more.
Have you ever raced your Porsche in one of those local club things Pete? Not rallys necessarly, but how about those courses set up in large parking lots etc?
Think I'd have to check that out. Safe fun if you will. |
| Parking lot things= autocross. | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 11:47 AM | | I've done a few but they are pretty boring, IMO. Too much standing around and very short runs (45 seconds) at tipping cones at slow speeds in a parking lot.
I prefer driving on real tracks. Higher speeds, sustained gees, abusive braking and much, much more time actually driving at the limit.
Pete |
| You should ride with me one day when I'm late for work. | Twilight Error® Nov 27, 2001 12:13 PM | | "Higher speeds, sustained gees, abusive braking and much, much more time actually driving at the limit." Pretty much describes how I drive when I'm really late. Of course, high speed in my truck on a dirt road is far different than your high speed on a track, but its no less heart-stopping... |
| LOL..... | Pat T.® Nov 27, 2001 7:28 PM | | Try a 4 wheel drift at 75mph in a crew cab 4x4.....on pavement. LOL...yea I was late to work too, believe it or not the truck slides quite well. But it is much more fun on dirt, pavement is for getting to the race track ;o) |
| You're running BFG TAs right? | Twilight Error® Nov 28, 2001 7:35 AM | | How's the treadwear? I just replaced my Badyear Wrangler APTs with a set (same size - p235/75 I couldn't afford the jump to 32x11.5, and the shop didn't have 5 31x10.5s). I had expected to use them extensively this winter in N.H. but events have changed my winter plans. As for going into a 4 wheel drift on pavement at 75mph, I think I can pass on that. Not that I haven't gone sliding at high speed in snowy parking lots... |
| P tires on a truck? Try LT and you'll never go back! | CraigH Nov 28, 2001 1:03 PM | | The stiffer sidewalls really help handling. |
| Imagine an endo in a car... | Howard Roark Nov 27, 2001 11:48 PM | | And you can't 'unclip'. An endo in a rally car would happen the same way it happens on an MTB- nose dives down first, rear end follows and goes over the front. Having a front engine car probably wouldn't help the situation (this is where that 911 of your dreams has an advantage! ;)
Nonetheless, i can't deny it looks like fun to zip around in one of those things- i'd just to try to stay rubber side down.

| Very kewl, thanks! | mugg Nov 27, 2001 11:14 AM | | I see that you're a fellow I-clubber. What color wagon didja get? We got the silver wagon and it rocks! |
| We're twins! | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 11:20 AM | | Got one too. Here it is (if the link works): |
| Oops... | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 11:57 AM | | Since they were out of the complimentary Yak roof racks, I ended up getting a Thule hitch rack. I'm more than a little forgetful, so this way I won't take out new bikes on new car by running into new house.
Hmmm... maybe we aren't twins. Here's what I look like: |
| Holy fock! | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 12:02 PM | | What made you dress up as fredfredfred for halloween?

| Appalling environmental damage. | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 11:16 AM | | Think of all of the soil that was displaced, the foliage that was killed, the animals that were scared away by the noise and pollution from those ungodly internal combustion engines (I know they don't meet emmision standards, let alone noise standards).
HORRIFIC!
Pete
p.s. Save the plankton, eat a whale. |
| But ... but... | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 11:29 AM | | That car that went off the cliff did a selfless job of de-berming the trail. |
| Yup... | Ska! Nov 27, 2001 11:17 AM | | Great stuff. I haven't missed a single WRC race since 97 and have each and every one on tape.
This year's been a great year and the fact that there are so many driver capable of taking the title on the final race (Great Britain) just adds to the excitement.
Personally I hope to see Sainz win but his chances are the slightest out of all the leaders. Nevertheless he is still who I want to see atop the podium for the driver's championship.
Tommi or Colin would be cool too but since Tommi is working with a new car he is not used to, a new co-driver and a broken back after his huge crash in France his chances don't look so good either. Colin is always balls to the wall and if I had to put money on it I'd say Colin is going to take it this year. He's been driving well and the Ford is finally holding together for him. Basically I hope it's anyone but Richard Burns (a.k.a. mister whiner) He's a great driver, just never stops crying. Too bad he's with Peugeot next year.
I wonder why that video clip didn't show the fuel truck that rolled over and crush the two Skodas waiting their turn at the start gate. That was insane.
I love how you just never know what to expect in the world of WRC.
Ska! |
| MMMmmmfffpft!! | Dave W. Nov 27, 2001 11:23 AM | | (in Shatner voice) Must ... not ... spoil ... surprise for Ska! |
| I'll spill the beans. | Pete. Nov 27, 2001 11:31 AM | | Peter Brady, driving a stock 1971 green station wagon proves to be a spoiler as he takes the last race of the year (with the aid of a tikki figure that he wears around his neck for the entire race).
