Subaru - IMBA program anyone try it?Steve-O
Nov 27, 2001 9:54 AM
Several months ago I posted a question about good cars for MTBers. It looks like the Subaru is going to win out (probably the Legacy Outback). Has anyone ever used the IMBA/Subaru VIP program? Looks like a good way to get a good price on a nice car...

If everything works out we might have a new ride for Christmas!

It works! I got a WRX wagon at the end of September through the program. You not only get the car at invoice, but also get the options at invoice. It goes like this:

1) Call IMBA

2) IMBA calls Subaru

3) Subaru calls you to verify info (this should happen within a week, if not, call IMBA back)

4) Subaru sends info to you and your designated dealer.

5) At this point the sales manager called me and I had the car in 4 weeks. You'll have to order the car so if they already put in their orders for the month, then it will take up to 8 weeks.

I emailed IMBA. 6 weeks later, I got a reply it doesn't work in Canada. "Fine", I said, then I turned off their water and gas.

Hope you enjoy yer new rocket, Dave. Jim <-sticking with the old Shadow for another year +. Bastidges, get my hopes up and then....

What if you bought the Subaru in Washington?
Yeah, I could smuggle it back acrossJimC

the border with a really dirty bike on the back! They'll never know! Hah!

Without a long dissertation, duty and taxes make it undoable, Dave. Cheaper just to bargain here. I can get one for $37K CAD, or, about $22,950, plus shipping and the usual crud.

I was just whining. How are the ocitillos? Jim <-- slippery roots instead kinda guy

Ocotillos? Huh? Well, thankfully, they aren't blooming right now, so I think I'm safe on the trails for another 6 months or so!

And we're selling one of the team cars. It's a 2001 Legacy Outback with 13,400 miles in good condition for 18,600. That's a good deal, huh? If no one from the team buys it, I think it's going back to the dealer. You should e me if you're interested in a used one. It hasn't been used too much for motorpacing, I don't think.
Hmm.....Steve-O

Actually I would be interested; but Mrs. Steve-O has her mind set on a specific color and some specific options... Your right though, that is a good deal. I hit Autotrader.com and that's a very fair price...

I was more curious to see if anyone had any hassles with the dealers or their salesmen when using this program. It almost sounds too good to be true!

We (my wife and I) got an '01 outback last January in the transition between old and new programs- the old program was free racks (via yakima) and the subaru extended care (free service for ~50K miles via subaru). Despite the transition the IMBA rep was incredibly, supremely helpful and got me the old deal even though it had technically expired and I had already purchased my car before the new deal was announced (we were lucky/shrewd in negotiating the price for our subaru so the old deal was actually a better deal anyway). Though it took a little time and a lot of effort on IMBA's end, everything worked w/o a hitch. Unfortunately, this only answers half your question- since Subaru sent us a cupon book directly that all dealers have honored w/out question- I can only hope/assume that their documentation guaranteeing invoice price will be similarly well-recieved. I do know that Subaru dealers get incentives from Subaru for every car they sell over and above the money they make after invoice so it's not like they are losing money.

good luck!

Just because you are paying "invoice" doesn't mean that you are paying what the dealer paid for the car. If they have a lot of cars on the lot and if you are persistant, you should be able to negotiate a better deal.

That being said, the "invoice" price is usually VERY decent if you don't feel like spending a few days screwing around and walking out of the dealership a few times. We got our Mazda on a similar program and while we probably could have gotten a better deal, we didn't have to fight with the dealership (much).
Yes got a Outback Wagonmtbiker71

If you have a trade in they will try to low ball you since they are not getting their normal profit. Best bet is to sell your trade in outright and bring cash to the table. The Loans are still pretty cheap right now thru Subaru. They are not the 0% that others are giving but they range from 2.9 to 5.9%.

The program definately made the car buying experience a lot better but the car salesmen are still slimmy in my book. They are looking for every single way possible to get you to pay more. Don't fall for the underbody, paint, or interior protections they try to sale. It's a rip costs them next to nothing, does next to nothing, and they charge you out the a$$ for it.

Too bad about the Yakima Rack deal they had ending. It was very sweet.

Ride On.
Thanks!Steve-O

The plan was to see what they offer us as a trade-in then sell the old car outright if they low-ball us.... Otherwise it sounds like a good deal...

We've got a 94 Impreza wagon and love the way it drives, but been avoiding test driving the WRX because we know what will happen. Got to admit that we never carry the bikes with the car, have a truck for that. My folks recently got the swanky Legacy 6cyl wagon and my dad loves that car. They upgraded from a worn out 86 Subaru GL10 Turbo wagon.
