| Interesting commute home last night (unusual experience).. | Rollingbones Nov 27, 2001 12:38 PM | | ..My commute home last night (15.5 mi) was totally in the dark. Just over 1/3 of it is along the American River Bike Trail (Sacratomato). As I was streaming along in the chilly night air (about 39 deg) I was vivid mind scenerios thinking I was slipping through enemy lines on a bike, trying to blend in with the locals (yeah, remember it's night and there's almost no one else around) while evading the high-tech patrol helocopter (Sac County Mounties). ...About a half mile from a park that I exit to hit it back on the streets, I found myself at a dead stop in the middle of a herd of deer...three to the right and five to the left, including a three point buck (that's 3 on each side). The closest was about 15 feet away while the furthest was no more than 45 feet or so. I use a helmet mounted light and I just stood there and watche and enjoyed for over a half a minute before the started moving away. I left and went on to successfully complete my mission!!! Night Dirt!! |
| Nature is so cool to watch. | JRinCA Nov 27, 2001 12:50 PM | | Nothing like watching a deer running/jumping down the trail and finally vanishing up a hill or down the side of the mountain. |
| was riding at night one time | dante Nov 27, 2001 1:03 PM | | and came upon 5 or 6 deer, a couple of whom had already bedded down for the night. Had to pass by one within 4 feet or so of one who was lying down, and she just lowered her head to try to "hide"... Didn't get up or run away or anything. Was really quite special.

PS The bike has been used as a military vehicle for years, from WWII (one?) to the Vietman war. |
| ain't deer great? | Shockee Nov 27, 2001 1:17 PM | | ... but they just finished off all my Chrysanthemums and starting humping on my front lawn today (no kidding, but hey, where are they gonna find a private room?)! I run into one or more every time I jog here - scares the crap outta me in the pitch of night, but they seem kinda domesticated since the cougars stay away from the city lights and hunters can't shoot them in town. Never see deer on the MTB trails ... because that's were the cougars are. Ain't deer tasty, though! |

As I got closer, I realized it was two gopher snakes. Nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more. |
