| Reducing JPG/JPEG File Size... | John Dec 30, 2001 10:17 AM | | Straight from the camera the files avg. about 332KB, meaning theyre to large a file to post either here or in the marketplace. I spent sometime t aking and editing these images and sure dont feel like doing it twice.
My question is, can i reduce the file size if the file is already on the hard disk? or do i have to adjust the file size when downloading the image from the camera. |
| do you have access to adobe photoshop? | ol-crank Dec 30, 2001 10:40 AM | | nm |
| You can adjust it with your computer | brianc Dec 30, 2001 10:48 AM | | Almost any Photo editor will allow you to reduce the file size. I use MS PhotoEditor b/c it's free. Most editor will work about the same. Under Save As.. select JPEG and set the Quality (compresion factor). I use 97 or 98%. The higher the beter. and tweak the level until it's under the 200 kB limit.
Also, before you reduce the file size make sure to adjust the width (Size) of your picure to 600 pixels wide. That's the size all the Review.com sites are optimized too. And make the picture easily viewiable by the ever user. Unless its a Panoramic, then leave it wide.
hope that helps. |

most have a "save for web" feature which reduces size as well as DPI down to 72DPI, I take 500k files and reduce them down to 50K all the time and on the screen you can't tell the difference
You can download PhotoShop Essentials from adobe.com
sweet app, retail is around a 100.00
better than most of the more stripped down versions that come with most digital cameras, more features
it has a feature when you "save for web" that will allow you to choose different quality settings and it will tell you how long it will take to load at different connection speeds
i.e., 22 seconds at 26K
I run highspeed both at home and at the shop (former IT guy, used to big pipes) so for me, not a big deal, but I don't want someone on a dialup connection to abort looking at a picture on my site because it is taking too long....
also try to crop the image, get rid of the unneeded stuff
it's also a lot of fun..
