Winter riding in NH(12 posts)

Winter riding in NHradair

Here in the White Mountains, we're kind of in between seasons. A little too much snow for riding in the woods (so we thought), not quite enough snow for the snowpigs (a.k.a. snowmobiles to the unfamiliar) to pack the trails out.

So the past couple of days were spent figuring out where the riding might be reasonable (can only take so much skating). We found that trails in dense woods had enough protection that it was actually quite good, as were places where hikers had packed it out. Downhills also worked no matter how much use they had seen.

This shot is on a new trail built this summer - good views from the clearcuts on it, a strenuous climb in summer conditions.

...lodge behind him. My buddy Michael (the minimalist - no phone, no TV) opted not to take 10 minutes to put his studded tires on for this ride. This pond is smooth ice with a dusting of snow. He managed to stay upright here, but took a couple other diggers on the ride.

He put the studs on as soon as we got back.
Nice bike for a minimalist....2melow

I was expecting more along the lines of a rigid Bridgestone MB-1 with a girvin flexstem...

Fully Ano. SC w/Marzocchi and no phone? I don't get it...

I think he got the SC in '99. Before that he was riding a Diamondback hardtail with a Mag 21 (broken arch held together[?] with duct tape), thumbshifters (unmatched), bent brake levers, and one badly-tweaked bar end. Oh, and toe clips and no helmet. The guy can ride, though...

He has seen the light and recently bought a new Toyota truck (from the bike description, you can imagine what he was driving!). He's even talking about a full-face helmet.

Wonders never cease.

This bridge feels much narrower than it looks. He's looking a bit concerned with the fall potential, but without studs it's also more slippery than it looks.
Stay within the lines!radair

The boot-packed trails were fast and fun - as long as you didn't stray outside the track. We met one hiker on yesterday's ride, and Michael promptly endoed in front of her.

With no snow in the forecast, I'll be finishing 2001 and starting off the new year with some quality riding. Hope you can do the same.

Happy New Year to you all!
Good job!AK Ken

Looks like a grand ride you guys had. And if you're gonna wreck, might as well do it in front of an audience. Nothing like taking a big ole header, doing a forward 2 and a half Indy grab McTwisting face drop nose drag and not having anyone there to appreciate it!

The reflective striping on his jacket really jumps out eh, the flash apparently went off?

Reduced them from 90 to 51 in MS Photo Editor, but it didn't seem to make much difference. Care to educate me? (Major task, I realize).
No problem. I'll email ya. nmMtbIrv

I may get to join you in the next couple of years. The wife misses New England and southern NH is the primary place we would head to. I miss having mountains nearby. I only wish my wife missed western NC as much.
and no traffic jam, nic pics. Are you close to ski areas? nmol-crank
