What to do? '01 Z3 100 or Fox Forx R 100, hmmmm... (9 posts)
| What to do? '01 Z3 100 or Fox Forx R 100, hmmmm... | Nuget Jan 30, 2002 7:49 AM | | Well i've asked this question in other forums but have not got enough info so I thought i'd come here to where the passionites roam. I'd love to hear from people who ride the Z3 and what they think about it. I'm wondering if the Fox's price tag of $360 is really worth it over the $225 price of the Z3.
It'd be nice to spend less but if the technology is that much better in the Fox then I may save some more pennies.
This fork will be going on a SC Heckler
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Have a good one |
| Both are good.... | RalphL Jan 30, 2002 8:18 AM | | I have several close riding buds that run the Fox. All are impressed with the rigidity. One has had problems with oil leakage from the bottom of the left stanchion, however. I've been using Marzocchi products for quite a few years without any serious problems. I would suggest considering the 2001 Z1 MCR at Supergo for $329 in my selection process. They also have the '01 X-Fly 100 at $279 if air is an option. The Z1 is a real nice oil damped, big hit, free-ride job, whereas the X-Fly is more of a long travel XC fork. |
| re: What to do? '01 Z3 100 or Fox Forx R 100, hmmmm... | Kitchenware Jan 30, 2002 8:28 AM | | Well, having not ridden the Fox I can't say much about it, the Z3 I have. I've been riding a 01 Z3 air 100mm for a year now and it feels pretty damn plush for an air fork (for any type of fork for that matter)and pretty cheap.
If I was about to buy a new fork though I would have to go with the X-Fly at pricepoint
2001 Marzocchi X-Fly 100 MSRP $600.00 Price Point $279.98 |
| No question. | Zonic Man Jan 30, 2002 8:35 AM | | Fox over the zoke.
Stiffer, plusher, lighter.
The change is noticable.
We made it on suzy's titus. She is MUCH happier now. |

'01 Z3 100 or Fox Forx R 100, hmmmm... | reed Jan 30, 2002 8:45 AM | | I ran a marzocchi (Z2- not that much different than the Z3 except less travel) a psylo and now a fox forx (float rl) - the forx is so much better than either of the two forks it's hard to explain. The fox, even though it's air and the other two are coil, is WAY plusher and more responsive, the dampening is much smoother and the fork is so much stiffer than either of the other two it's really hard to compare. A buddy has the forx vanilla 125 rlc and it feels pretty identical to the float maybe a tiny bit better on the small stuff. I was a marzocchi devotee since they are so bombproof (and I'm >200lbs, race and ride a ton) but the forx just blows them away. Plus the forx are made really, really well, everything is machined aluminum and the colors are understated (my marzocchi was a bright yellow-gold color that always annoyed me), I just really like the way it looks. The one unknown with the forx is long-term reliability, but my rear fox shock is completely bombproof and when buddies have sent rear shocks to fox for maintenance they've always turned them around in days. Your buddy with the leaking oil- what's his experience with fox- good bad?
OK- more than my $0.02. Good luck! |
| Looking for a 4" coil fork.... | Nuget Jan 30, 2002 9:04 AM | | So I wasn't really thinking of the Z1-MCR as an option since it's a 5" fork to begin with. I also decided against the X-Fly 100 as well.
Looks like I might have to start saving some extra $ to get the Fox Vanilla R 100.
The longer travel forks are not an option because the '99 Heckler is designed around an 80mm fork so I don't want to push it too much.
Also I weigh in at 135 lbs. with gear so how stiff the fork is won't really be that noticable. I doubt i'd be able to tell the difference between the two.
Thanks all and keep the suggestions coming |
| There is a way to reduce the Z1-MCR's travel... | S+J Jan 30, 2002 9:45 AM | | ...to 110 mm as opposed to 130. I believe it's a kit that Marzocchi sells for around $20-30. I recently rode a friend's G.F Level Betty w/ a Z1 MCR on it, and although the bike was a complete POS the fork most certainly wasn't. It's a really plush, stiff, big-hit fork, a bit heavy though I reckon it's worth it. If you're looking for a great fork that won't screw with your geometry consider the Z.2 Atom-80/Atom Race. At 80 mm, it won't mess with your geometry yet offers a similar plush, linear coil ride. Haven't ridden the X-Fly or the Fox, can't comment on them. Good luck. S.J |
| Yes i've heard that but... | Nuget Jan 30, 2002 10:21 AM | | If i'm going to spend $330 on the MCR and get the kit for $30 i'm already at $360 so I might as well get the Fox. Plus the extra weight with the MCR is something i'd rather not have.
As far as the travel, I already have a Rock Shox Judy RS long travel fork on the Heckler and the steering is fine. Even though the crown to axle is 17.5" and the Fox or Zoke will add an inch I think it'll be fine. Plus i'd like 4" in front to match the 4" in the rear.
I do love the atom-80 though. If I was putting together a HT I would pick one up for sure. I wish I had the extra $ to buy one for future use, expecially since they're so cheap right now.
Thanks for the ideas and input |
| 4" is a good number for that bike | kristian Jan 30, 2002 10:54 AM | | I tried 80mm, a 100mm, and 130mm forks on my Heckler and the 100mm was by far the best. The 80mm felt too quick and the 130mm felt too flexy (plus it wanted to wander a lot on climbs). Gotta love the old Marzocchis where you can just drop the stanchions out of the crown and put a different set on...
K (misses his old Heckler...) |
