What to do in New England...........non-mtb..............1WD

Hey all, I haven't been posting much lately, haven't really even had the chance to lurk. I'm busy today too, so I might not be able to respond to this post.

Anyway I'm going to be somewhere in CT then going to Boston, MA and then heading up to Concord, NH over the presidents day weekend. Can anybody recommend some sites and/or activities (preferably outdoor) to check out. I will have most of my time in the Concord, NH area so stuff to do around there would be best. I'll probably be camping in the Concord area too if someone can recommend a campground w/ winter camping.

Most likely the MTB will be out of the question, but I hope someone might help with some other cool ideas. Sorry this is so vague but its all the info I have right now.

Thanks for any help ahead of time

Dave

The Mystic Seaport and Aquarium are excellent family attractions right off Exit 89 on Route 95. They're a little expensive to get into, but very much worth it if you're travelling with Kids. The Aquarium was just rennovated and expanded - I spent two hours at the Coastal Alaska exhibit last weekend and the rest of the day inside the main building. Not as good as riding...
The Seaport is right down the road, I haven't been there in several years so I cant' tell you whats going on. Downtown Mystic is a few minutes down Rt 27, follow the signs. Good food at the Voodoo Grill and Margaritas, decent shopping on main street if you're into that (go to the Green Marble on Steamboat wharf and you'll never bother with Starbucks again....) and its a shame BF Clyde's is closed for the season - it is one of the few (if not the last) steam powered cider press in the world. They sell hard cider by the gallon in the basement.

Bluff Point in Groton (get on Rt 1 going south) is a great place to ride if you do bring a bike. There is a dirt road all the way around the peninsula - it is impossible to get lost with the Ocean on three sides and the parking lot on the fourth. The singletrack in the park is typical New England - twisty with lots of rocks and roots.

The two casinos - Foxwoods Resort and the Mohegan Sun are nearby and ready to accept any money you've no desire to keep. Foxwoods IS the world's largest casino, and one of the most profitable. I went once, spent my $.75 and walked out. Too much smoke, too much noise - I work too hard to throw my money away at a slot machine.

Up the road a few miles in Watch Hill/Misquamicut (R.I.) is Napatree point and the WWII fort that defended this part of the coast from German subs (they did actually sink a Uboat). Mostly its home to Osprey that fish in the tidal ponds. The point used to be a lot longer than it is now, the '38 Hurricane removed the tip and several homes.

There is more to do in the Southeast corner of Ct, I can get you better/more detailed info if you want.
Also, try...Puzman

-US Navy Submarine museum in Groton. Great FREE museum with tours of USS Nautilus (first nuclear sub).
-Peabody Museum in New Haven. GREAT natural history museum.
-Yale has two outstanding art galleries, plus lots of good bars, restaurants, shops, etc. in New Haven on/near the green.
-climbing gym in Wallingford, if you're so inclined.
-plenty of good riding in the area...
The Nautilus has gone to EB for maintence.Twilight Error®

If you are going to be in the Concord area there are a few things to do. If you have ice skates there are tons of local ponds to skate on, a big one at White Park in Concord. That is assuming it gets cold up here again. Bear Brook State Park has hiking and XC ski trails that you can hike and snow shoe on. Again assuming we get any real amount of snow up here. There are a few short hikes around the North West part of Concord that are hard to explain how to get. There are a few Ski and Bike shops around the area that could give you some info too. I grew up in the Concord area so it is like my back yard. S&W is the best shop in town in my opinion. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions you think I could answer.

Come into the Cask n' Flagon in Boston for the Super Bowl. I'm working, and anyone from this board that comes in, the first two beers are on me. Then I'll need you to buy a bunch of beers and tip me well since I am officially a broke college student now.
