| The joy of a LBS... (x-post to Singlespeed forum) | Mr. Johnsen Jan 30, 2002 2:04 PM | | Ohh! -The joy of having nice local bike stores. My Specialized based singlespeed needed a replacement fork for the old (and now really bad)Manitou fork (as seen in the first picture). And since the Spez (as it's called) require a one inch fork this was not an easy task. The first attempt ended (last saturday) with a really nice fork, but it turned out that it was for 24 inch wheels... Bummer... So, I thought it was shot, but.. Just one block away from home theres a really small bike shop that deals mostly with three-speeds and city-bikes. And while on my way to trade in the 24" fork i thought... what the h... lets try him... And yezzzz! -From the pile of old forks he pulled out a really ancient cro-mo fork! -Even with a long enough steerer tube to run aheadset! -And the price? 10 dollars! -Oh joy! -All it needs is some sanding and some paint.
-And to top it all of... When i arrived in the store with the afforementioned 24" fork, I got my money back - and - got to go trough a stack of 1 1/8" forks they were trowing away. So i got two really nice (and unused) Trek forks and to top it all of a Klein alu fork! -Wow! -This was a good day! Heres even a few pictures of the beast! (both old and new)
Heres the old configuration:
And with the "new" fork:
