| So, what's in your hydration pack? | Birdman Jan 31, 2002 6:25 AM | | Had a few shots left on my camera, and happened to be cleaning out the HAWG, so figured what the heck...

| Well in my HAWG | Flyer Jan 31, 2002 6:47 AM | | 2 tubes, couple of 25gr. CO2 cartridges, Crank Bros alloy pump, VERY comprehensive 1st aid kit, compass, extra brake and shift cable, leatherman, zip ties, shock pump, patch kit, tire levers, couple of zip-loc freezer bags, small flashlight, a cylume stick, flashing tail light, ink pen, 10 dollar bill, whistle, waterproof matches, couple of bandanas, motorola talkabout if needed for the ride, cell phone (turned off), Wire mesh splint for 1st aid kit and a small bottle of chain lube.
As needed - trail maps, and if I am riding somewhere like by my parents in Durango, a small survival kit with space blanket etc. Power bars or the like.
Under the seat - patch kit, reg and glueless, spoke wrench, chain tool, spare chain links and subpins for Shimano, power link for SRAM, Crank Bros. 17 tool, duct tape.
Gee...that is a lot of crap....but one time or another I have used all of it, except thankfully the survival kit. |

"naked people on the summit"!? Those crazy H'burg folks, gotta love 'em. |
| Noooo nudity | cleatgrrl Jan 31, 2002 7:16 AM | | Drug addled nudists in sub-30 degrees. Just what I need. I'm afraid we're going to miss it. My sister is having a superbowl party. I really like the climb to flagpole knob, but this time of year I'm working hard on my "preparation" for racing. My legs are tweaked enough without 5 hours in the cold. What a wussy loser I'm turning into. Have a great time, please take photos. |
| Noooo nudity | mtnpat Jan 31, 2002 7:46 AM | | Thanks, will do, good luck on your racing prep!! If I get any good butt shots I will post them here first. |

| You will be surprised | Birdman Jan 31, 2002 7:55 AM | | Just a larger first air kit, another 2 Talkabouts, a few bungee cords, fleece blanket, and a small kit with some spare parts (car parts - bulbs, fuses, etc.).
My bike bag contains EVERYTHING - just throw it in the car with the HAWG, throw the bike on the roof, and go!

| You never know when you might need a ...... | scorcher Jan 31, 2002 10:14 AM | | ...Union Jack.
Though I must confess its been a while since I rode to the summit of a mountain that hadn't already been claimed.
How was the honeymoon to Utah, by the way - or is that what the cleaning is for? It would take a momentous event like that for me to be cleaning either my HAWG or mu bike bag. |
| Ya never know... | Birdman Jan 31, 2002 12:26 PM | | I've got 1 Union Jack bandana and 2 Canadian Flag bandanas. And, there are NO mountains where I live, so that pretty much puts the kibosh on "conquering" any peaks in NJ. Don't worry - I only "fly" the CDN flag on July 1st, and the Union Jack rarely sees the light of day. One 4th of July, I happened to have it tied onto my Camelbak, and somebody commented that it was "nice to see the Confederate Flag again"?!?!?! Ummm... duh... whatever - just smile and keep riding before they figure it out.
The honeymoon isn't until May. Cleaning out gear-bags, car trunks, old toolboxes and such is very therapeutic. I think I was looking for something, and had to completely empty the HAWG to find it, figured I'd empty the bike bag too. I discovered that I had 5 pairs of gloves in there! Also found a Malt Nut Powerbar that expired in '99... still tasted okay though.

Sram master links and extra links
Swisstech mini pliers/screw drivers
spoke wrench
extra spokes (in seat tube) and nipples
Minimalist First Aid Kit
Antibacterial wipes
Antiseptic ointment
Tweezers
Safety pins
Latex exam gloves
Small roll of adhesive tape
Gauze pads
Nail clippers
Assorted
Band-Aids
Small Spyderco knife half smooth half serrated blade
A couple of medium zip ties
Cliff Bars or Wagu Ru Chew energy bar
70 0z. bladder with water
Duct Tape
Tiny bottles of TriFlow and White Lightening
Small Camera, disposable or small point and shoot.
For epic multiday rides it's a whole other story and a Camelback Peak Bagger, All of the above plus:
100 oz. bladder with water(INSTEAD OF 70 OZ.)
2 32 oz. Nalgenes with Gatorade and extra Gatorade mix in Zip Locks
more duct tape wrapped on the Nalgenes
To hell with the American Express but don't leave home without duct tape. Excellent to put on the inevitible blisters on multiday rides.
extra XTR shifter cable
Extra Brake cable
Extra rear deraileur (1 for group)
Misc small bolts and cable caps
Shock Pump (one per group)
More zip ties
SPF 30 sun screen
Lip balm with sun protection.
Bag Balm in small bottle or tin
Bandana

Photon mini light or head lamp
Pen
2 2" metal pipe clamps, use similar to zip ties but much stronger. You can clamp a broken seat or chain stay (or other broekn part)back together enough to get to a road or something.
Small tube of super glue (the ultimate Locktite) also can close wounds in an emergency and make all kinds of repairs
Compass or on some major trips Garmin 12 GPS
Pocket 10X25 binoculars, I am considering a mini monocular to save wt. and space.
water proof matches or butane lighter or magnesium fire starter (they are the best because they work well in wind and rain and get hot enough to start wet tender on fire)
2 or 3 paper towells
Depending on temp and area may take MSR MiniWorks water filter and AquaPur purification tablets and neutralizer
2 shop rags
2 or 3 Lava hand-cleaner/wipes
*55 gal. heavy duty trash bag. This is probably the cheapest, lighest, most compact, survival tool you can have. Multi uses, emergency poncho, use it to sit on when the ground is wet, shelter, ground cloth, sleeping bag, bike cover, etc etc. If you can find orange ones they can be used as an emergency locator/indicator.
I'm starting to get dizzy from this, yeah all this crap weighs a ton but you get used to the pack after a day. This is what we carried last year on a self supported 5 day ride of Kokopelli. When going with several people in a group there's no need for each person to carry all the same parts and tools. Split that stuff up between all of the riders and it saves a lot of weight. This is in addition to food, tents, and sleeping bags and pads, and backpacker stoves we hauled in or Bob trailers. |
