| Ireland | LakeRaven Jan 31, 2002 3:21 PM | | Does anyone have any insight on cycle touring Western Ireland? I've booked a week long Inn to Inn tour with Bike Vermont there at the end of June. Has anyone been to Ireland and have some information to share? I posted this before with a HUGE picture (bygones) I have been stymied by the passing of photopoint and the adoption of exporer as my browser, now seemingly, I am unable to post photos. |
| I looked at the Bike Vermont web site... | Zignzag Jan 31, 2002 4:30 PM | | I toured through all the places you're going except the Aran Islands. You're not covering many miles, but that's not a bad thing because it gives you more time to explore and hang out at pubs and listen some "trad". One week isn't much time so it's best not to try to see too much. You'll get a good dose of Ireland, though. You're going to love it. I'm sure you'll wish the trip lasted longer. I'd love to go back.
Lahinch is the surf capitol of Ireland - a resort town. Cliffs of Mohrer are impressively tall. The Burren is a bizzare landscape of crushed-rock domes. Galway is a beautiful town with a river running through it and closed-off streets with shops, pubs, and restaurants. Clifden is a quaint little town in the Connemarra, which is full of hills and peat bogs - very desolate. You also go through some of the Gailtachts where people speak Gaelic. Don't try to pronounce the Gaelic words as if they were English, it doesn't work! |
