Some info on Pisgah closures(10 posts)

Some info on Pisgah closuresPisgahboy

OK, after much digging, I finally have some reliable info on what is going on over yonder across the valley in Pisgah with the LWO (linear wildlife openings) closures. There have been some closures of GATED ROADS that were previously open to bikes and horses. Some of these roads share the same names as nearby trails. The trails did not get closed. As of this point, it doesn't appear that any of the roads that share right of way with a trail got closed off. I'm not positive of this, but so far it looks like we are OK on that front. There are some roads that were on the list to be shut down that the Forest Service decided not to close. That is a good thing. I'll be up front and say that some of the stuff shut down wasn't worth riding anyway. Some of it was. There is an appeal of this planned so I'll post any other info when I get it. Again, as of now, there have been no trails closed, just gated roads. Another thing to remember is that this genius idea came from the NC Wildlife Resources Commision. Please direct all your hate mail, threats of bodily harm, maternal insults, nastygrams and angry phone calls to them. I'm sure they'll appreciate all of your kind words ;-)

I have been recieving e-mails about these closings from the Blue Ridge Bicyle Club. They are planning on appealing the decision. Both the the Equistrian crowd and the Sierra Club (introduction of non-native plants) are also planning on appealing. I am pondering writing an appeal letter myself - takes some digging through the Code of Federal Regs., but not to difficult. But, I wonder at what point the mt. bike community over plays its hand.

The forest service did rethink its original plan in order that gated roads that make up parts of established mt. bike loops will remain open - this includes roads in North Mills River and in Bent Creek. I worry about the precedent that may be set by these closings and the unknown riding oppurtunites that may be lost, but I also wonder if challenging the ruling may hurt out relationship with the forest service in the end.

I encourage comments.

I'm glad the FS didn't go for the full deal. I too wonder if the folks may overstep their bounds. This really doesn't do anything to the "regular" riding up here. As far as opportunities lost, I've ridden about half of what they shut down. Some nice scenery here and there. I generally only rode those things one time and that was it. I'm sorta ridin' the middle ground on this one. I'm not thrilled for sure, but, it could have been worse. I am concerned about the precedent though. I will answer the "call to arms" for my bikin' bretheren if called upon.

Did ya catch the Syndicate at the H-bar back in Dec.? It was a good show.

The show was good, but not as good as their August show in G-vegas. The August show had a little more energy. I also think the guy on the horns took to much attention away from the rest of the band. Looking forward to seeing them in Columbia in Feb.

in the statement sent out to bike shops(fred let me read his) one of the reasons listed for the closures was HUNTING LICENSE MONEY! So it seems we need to lobby/write/ encourage the fs on a state level to license us poor pitiful mtn bikers for the privilege of using the forest--and yes out of staters would have to get day permits etc.

The future of our riding isnt at stake yet but the more clout we can get the better we will be and unfortunately MONEY TALKS!!

I just dont know how to go about getting the ball rolling other than a grass roots effort, and letting the fs know that WE want this.

and fyi- art roe retired and a new dude is in charge now-and a precedent has been set of catering to hunters and limiting some access

even though the closures really dont bother our great riding--the future actions might

There will be Real Women ready to fight for the right to ride! Thanks for the info - I will pass it along. My *Marla* attempt is quite lame, I know - was too chilly to go neckid. MtnBknDave: never too proud to consider the options and how to obtain them. Tara

Pisgahboy, I'm planning on riding there next weekend. Do you know which roads (or in which areas) there are closures? We would probably ride in the Fish Hatchery or Bent Creek areas, possibly Dupont SF.

Thanks!
