| A historical link! | slowride Mar 6, 2002 1:10 PM | | Came across this recently:
http://www.bikepro.com/guide.html
I can remember shelling out for their buyers guide when I was in college. Never got it.
But where else can you find an in-depth description of the difference between Farmer John, Farmer John's Nephew, and Farmer John's Cousin tires? :)
I love the old shit. Guess I'm livin' in the past. |
| Best bathroom reader on earth | JimC Mar 6, 2002 2:00 PM | | I got one and (argh) lent it to *someone*. Jam packed with a wealth of info, as I was a newbie. Ordered year 2 which never came out, but got a credit on an XTR derailleur.
Rumor had it Bike Pro had some light-fingered workers that re-used credit card numbers. Right after my XTR purchase, someone purchased a fur coat for almost $7K on my card in uppperstate NY. Since I was at Whistler skiing, it was hard for me to accomplish that feat.
Hadda sign an affidavit that swore I wasn't there/didn't do it.
Wish I had that catalog, it was the best! Or so I recall, faintly I might add. Jim |
| Yup...later renamed it | 2melow Mar 6, 2002 2:05 PM | | Irvine Bike Source if I my memory serves correct.
Way back then, they had the cheapest prices on the Onza Porcupine tires(remember those), and they cut me an even better deal when I bought 20. (not all for me, for friends too) |
| actually... | insider Mar 7, 2002 8:09 AM | | nope, that's not correct. i can unfortunately brag to you that i was the 3rd employee hired at the irvine bike source & was there for too long, we pissed off a lot of people it was mostly a piss poor management issue, but there was zero relation to BikePro, we all hated each other actually, but in a friendly sort of way. FYI as I unerstand it the previous owner of irvine bike source now runs Adrenaline Mountain Bikes in Anaheim CA, you can see their ad in MBA, i would NOT buy from them if i were you.

| Hahahahahaha......... | DanO Mar 6, 2002 2:41 PM | | Oh wow! I just read the first paragraph for the Gorilla brake beefer and I can't stop laughing. I thought I overkilled the measuring but I got nuttin' on these dudes!
Thanks for the link. |
| I have a couple of hard copies... | Slartibartfast Mar 6, 2002 2:45 PM | | ..95 mebbe. Very cool reading but talk about anal!

| LOL! I wonder who has been paying to host that site... | CraigH Mar 6, 2002 4:01 PM | | for the last 4 years?
It looks like it was last updated in '98! |

| They went bust in 98... | Slartibartfast Mar 6, 2002 4:44 PM | | ... if I remember rightly. Took a lot of folks' dream bike deposits with them.
Slarts (Once took a 2 hr bus ride just to see the place) |
| I just realized...... | celly Mar 6, 2002 4:01 PM | | How UPCC/D8 knows everything he does. He's memorized the entire catalog! I swear, some of his posts in tech sound like they've been cut and pasted verbatim from that source. He does make mention of BikePro often. I guess he should be using footnotes or something in his posts. ;-) |
| I've got one of those! From the first year they printed it... | Twilight Error® Mar 6, 2002 5:06 PM | | Its all the way up two flights of stairs and I don't feel like working all the way up an down right now. I think it was printed in '95 or '96 - there aren't even disc brakes and Paul's Derailluers are the hot technology... |
| re: A historical link! | Ed H. Mar 7, 2002 6:14 AM | | Yes, I got my copy. Nice stuff.
I preordered v.2. Never saw that $12 again. |
| Yeah, things change pretty fast in the world of bikes, but... | Gill-Again Mar 7, 2002 7:31 AM | | it's nice to see some things stay the same: http://www.bikepro.com/products/headsets/king_hset.html
Granted, they're shown in purple anno, but they're still the same design!! |
| Wow! I can finally ID my cranks... | NuMexJoe Mar 7, 2002 2:04 PM | | I always wondered what the crankset was on my '91 Merlin (bought it used). It's the Topline cranks, in the same "lavender" color shown in the catalog. Thanks!
