Hows this for a start to the day (minimal mtb)mtbmon

OK, if you think you had a rough start to the day, check this out. Its 6:15 and I step outside to let the dogs out and put the garbage out. Its about 18 deg so there is ice on the driveway. Normally this presents little problem, the key word being normally. As I trudge along with garbage cans in tow, I am suddenly flattened by my two golden retrievers. Then I notice it! As I lay prone on the iced drive, this smell about makes me gag. Is it the garbage which is now strewn over halfd the drive? Nope! The dogs, which are now roling on me, both got sprayed by a skunk. Now Im freezing, theres garbage everywhere, I stink, they stink and Im late for work! I guess its got to get better from there but what a start. Oh yeah, I did notice some cables in the garbage (obligatory mtb content).
It's cool Scott, no one at work will notice...Red Ascent

So long as you took a tomato-juice bath before going in.

I had to deal with the ice last night going home - ever do the bobsled in a '98 Metro on the 480 off-ramp? Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

When I was growing up in NW Pennsylvania, my neighbor and I were down in the pastor bringing the cows up for evening milking. He practically stepped on one of those critters. It got him up the chest and in the face. He did not have to share a seat with anyone on the school bus for a couple days. That was about 20 years ago and I can still remember it like it was yesterday..."Hey guys, it smells like there's a...." and then a long list of obsenities that I will not not mention.

At least when this happened to you this mourning, you probably didn't have one person rolling on the ground in fits of laughter and another pointing out the obvious, like "wow, does that stink" and "that sure does gotta suck".
No he had it worse - I'm sure his wife was the one laughing. nmRed Ascent

Don't use anything acidic to remove skunk odor -- it sets the scent. That's why tomato juice doesn't work very well. (It also turns you dog pink!) Also do not shampoo the coat as this may also set the scent.

Here are a couple of remedies that work:

1. Hydrogen Peroxide/baking soda solution

- Wash the eyes well with lots of water (might be too late for you now).

- mix 2 quarts of 3% hydrogen peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda, and 2 teaspoons of liquid soap (like dishwashing liquid).

-wet the coat thoroughly and apply 1/2 of the mixture avoiding contact with the eyes and mouth. Work the foaming mixture into the coat and leave on for 5 min. Rinse well. Repeat with remaining solution.

2. Alternative...

- Wash your dog with Massengil Douche! No kidding! Don't use the vinegar type. Follow directions for mixing with water (if you have the powder), work the solution into the dog's coat, do NOT rinse. Let dry.

3. Try one of the enzymatic odor elmiators like "Narture's Miracle" or "Odormute".

Be prepared to smell this lovely odor for the next couple of months each time the dog gets wet.

My dog was skunked a few weeks ago, and I first tried the douche and then the H2O2 solution the next day. I think the hydrogen peroxide works the best. Want to hear my douche story? ;^D

Good luck.

IFFY, now keeps a copious supply of hydrogen peroxide and douche in the garage!

Take a pint of hydrogen peroxide, cut it 50/50 with water, add an ounce or two of dog shampoo, and a 1/2 cup of baking soda... or so... I don't have the exact recipe here, but I doubt the exact ratios are critical.

It's supposed to work really well, but my dogs haven't gotten sprayed since I learned the recipe. I never did have any luck with tomato juice. You may end up with slightly more golden retrievers, though.
thanks DD and IFFY...thats some great advice...mtbmon

its cold here as I said, so I had to have the boys in the house all day since my wife was out running around. I cant imagine what I am going to come home to. This is even worse than when they roll in dead fish at the beach!
