Can we get SNOW BOWL in Flagstaff to open to mtbikers?(8 posts)

Can we get SNOW BOWL in Flagstaff to open to mtbikers?Endo in AZ

I'm repeating this from an earlier thread that will soon be off the Freeride page. i figured this may be a better forum for the discussion.......

Recently on the news here in Phx, there has a been alot of talk amongst Flagstaff merchants trying to get water up to the slopes for Snow Making Machines. I was thinking that they should open the slopes and chairs in the off season for mtbiking to generate moneys for the snow machinery. Flagstaff is a very hospitable little party town and the slopes there would be fantastic to ride. Hell, half the hill below the ski resort would most certainly be a blast to ride. I wonder what type of lobbying would need to be done to promote such a benificial relationship between Snowbowl and mtbikers?

What real steps have been taken to get Snow Bowl involved in the possibilities of revenue from the bikers? If they are having hikers go up, why not mtbkers? I cant believe the ignorance of people in position of power these days. Hey, isnt John McCane a mountain biker. I have seen him on TV a few times riding his bike with wife and kids in home town of Sedona? What gives. If I was living in Flagstaff right now I would be picketing naked. Ok, maybe i would wear a thong..LOL If there was something I could do in Phx to help with stirring up a bit of controversy..I would do it. Any Ideas?

But anyhow, I didnt want to turn this into a political discussion but it seems it has to be. We need a rally in Flag to open up peoples eyes and minds to the possiblities of a very large revenue source for the town that is always crying....NO SNOW NO SNOW. Im gonna run for governor goddamit..
i really dont know how, but part of it would have to beJm

part of it would have to be volunteering to build trails, if we could get that part done, then I think getting the rest to happen(lifts and getting people to come) would be secondary. I live in Prescott and Flag is just over an hour away on a good day, we got lots of great trails in prescott here, but good lift served would be unbeatable. I know plenty of people here and in phoenix that would ride it nearly every weekend if they could, or at the very least, switch off between Flagstaff and South Mountain.

ssadict is more knoledgable on this than I am, and knows at least a little of the issues at hand, indians vrs owners vrs forest service. These issues are where the big hurdles are. Would be interesting to see what Kirkwood, CA made last summer from mountain biking, they are a small operation in the sierras(compared to Northstar and Squaw) and might be a good example to present, that is if Kirkwood made any money themselves(i hope they did!).

to show interest, i got a few friends that can help, as well as ones in phoenix that probably would as well, i think rather than telling them just how much we want it, rather we should ask questions, what would it take to cut trails, what kind of issues are there, what we might be willing to do to help, etc.

Hey Jm...

If it is worth the time, LBS could be contacted to participate in support by sponsoring sections of trails that can be built with the guidance of Forestry Management. I would be willing to help however I could to get flyers around to LBS or what ever it would take like setting up a web location. My wife is a webdesigner. And she has just taken to the sport in the past few months. I can't imagine anyone in the Phx area that wouldn't love to get away to go riding in Snowbowl and the other local trails and give their money to local merchants for 3-4 days at a time. Hell we could even go in and utilize as much of the dig line as possible to provide trail space. just a thought.

It seems like if there is even any data from Sunrise regarding any success with mtbkers, that information could be easily handed to whomever is stirring up the charge to get snow machines in the trails. How much more damage to the terrain would mtbikers do than the construction of water lines to supply the machines?
i think it is an important issueJm

i dont know if that is necessary, i think that the big question is what are the land-issues? Having the owners/operators know that we would be fully willing to develop and build the trails though is critical if there is any chance.

I don't have a copy of the email i just sent, but i will update the board if i get a response.
