Duty question, from USA to CanadaUniverse

I ordered an Avalanche shock and revieced it over a month ago. I JUST recieved a bill called a Customs Entry/Invoice from PBB Global Logistics. Anyone else have this happen with a product handled by Puralator? I was not asked for Duty on the spot, but got this bill over a month later. Some have told me not to pay because I was not asked. Comments?

personal shipment or was there a company on the address that might make it a commercial goods shipment.

BTW PBB, (the old Peace Bridge Brokers,) have to follow rules that make it necessary for them to have authority to clear shipments.

The shipment was addressed to my apartment. No business name was involved. I thought when you paid duty, it was billed right away. I've ordered other things (guitar cabinet) from a company and there was nothing but the purchase charge through my VISA, nothing else. Thanks.

shipments it comes flying through no duty, no taxes. On the other half it is held for me to pay duty and taxes. Never brokerage charges.

When I get something by ups, they usually clear it through customs and I pay all three.(GST,PST & brokerage) I still don't understand how PBB got involved unless they are contracted to clear Purolator.

I could check with someone tomorrow if you want. Did you get billed for GST ,PST and another 50 bucks for brokerage?

GST, PST, Duty (6 bucks), PBB fees were only 43 cents. Total was $110.00 though. I guess its hit and miss and they audit what they want. I ordered through UPS and paid nothing once on an item of similiar cost.

You're supposed to pay the sales tax on US originated shipments. If you haven't in the past it's only because your package slipped through the cracks. That will happen occasionally (I'm not batting .500 like crank). If you get things though the MAIL and do get dinged, they hit you up for a flat $5 handling fee (call it brokerage if you may), plus sales tax (we only pay GST in Alberta). A $6 brokerage fee is a deal. UPS will charge you $35 + taxes in most cases, and that has nothing to do with the value of what's coming across. I once got charged $35 for a $20 item. I do NOT use UPS for transborder shipments.

I've had dealings with PBB. They clear packages for Purolator and a few other companies. They always invoice subsequent to the package being delivered. It's legit. Trust me, if you don't pay it they'll start pretty aggressive collections proceedings. I had a package sent a few years back where the shipper told me in writing that ALL costs were included in the shipping fee, including brokerage (yes, they can quote an all in fee based on who they use for shipping). I got the PBB invoice and made the company that sold the part pay for it. Yes, they did because I had it in writing that there wouldn't be brokerage fees.

Once again, consider yourself lucky that you only got dinged $6. Sales tax is supposed to be charged on all mailorder. It's the law, as much as I don't like it. Think of it from the perspective of the CCRA, though. If they didn't charge GST on US originated packages, why would anyone buy up here? The tax man cometh in many ways.

Pay the bill and get on with it. Live and learn. Plan for GST/PST on future packages. If you don't get charged it, consider it gravy.

I've had stuff shipped via UPS to me a couple of times when the shipper in the US made a mistake sending it UPS instead of US Post.

I've had nothing but problems with them, and they are very expensive with their brokerage fees. They make lots of mistakes too.

...rather than duty. If you went Purolator across the border I can guarantee that you get stuck with brokerage fees since they are not a bonded carrier. That's why I just have the stuff sent to a pickup point in Point Roberts. Check out www.thelettercarrier.com for next time. Easy to deal with and they'll give you a call for an extra 75 cents US when the package comes in. Oh, and the receiving charge is only $1.85 US.

On this invoice it claims to be GST and PST charges. Funny thing is my friend ordred the same shock with a more expensive option and did not get dinged for PST. That makes me even more angry.

not sure about Purolator, but this is routine with UPS. Yes, you are supposed to pay PST and GST on all consumer imports. Least likely to get dinged with taxes when using the national Postal Services or Fedex Ground.
In BC, you shouldn't be paying PST on bike partsK'Endo

Bikes, bike parts etc are 'alternate transportation' and not subject to PST.
