What's your favorite motivational technique, quote, etc.?up_hiller

I like ones that I can use to push myself when I'm on a long, tough climb at the end of a solo ride with my legs on fire, my head feeling like it is going to explode, and my pulse pounding in my ears. Things like:

"That which does not kill you makes you stronger."

I find that often after I run something like that through my head during a situation like that climb, I wind up taunting myself with it. "Well, you wanna get stronger, don't ya? Move the pedals, you [insert derogatory and very profane name implying weakness]!" It can go on from there for a really long time - until I reach the top or find something else to help keep me going.

Just wondered what others do. I like to borrow this stuff from others and try it out on myself.

happy trails!

So you best be enjoying yourself rather than worrying about somebody else.

Besides, if you can't be the fastest, just be the muddiest.

There's a Rush song...®andyA
Mar 27, 2002 7:27 AM
... that always plays in my head when I'm pushing that hard.

"Marathon", by Rush:

It's not how fast you can go

The force goes into the flow

If you pick up the beat

You can forget about the heat

More than just survival

More than just a flash

More than just a dotted line

More than just a dash

It's a test of ultimate will

The heartbreak climb uphill

Got to pick up the pace

If you want to stay in the race

More than just blind ambition

More than just simple greed

More than just a finish line

Must feed this burning need --

In the long run...

From first to last

The peak is never passed

Something always fires the light that gets in your eyes

One moment's high, and glory rolls on by

Like a streak of lightening that flashes and fades

In the summer sky

Your meters may overload

You can rest at the side of the road

You can miss a stride

But nobody gets a free ride

More than high performance

More than just a spark

More than just the bottom line

Or a lucky shot in the dark --

In the long run...

You can do a lot in a lifetime

If you don't burn out too fast

You can make the most of the distance

First you need endurance --

First you've got to last...

Lately I've come to realize that my mind was the saboteur of many of my past rides. It used to start early, like during the first climb. "You can just walk this you know... Just let them get a bit ahead of you and take a break, they will wait... Granny gear is your friend... You have exercise induced asthma, use it as an excuse... Is that the chili burrito from this morning I taste?.. The list just goes on and on.

Since I've come to realize this, I've been letting my body tell me when I'm done, not my mind. When my legs cramp and refuse to make that circular motion required for forward motion, I'm done. Up until that starts I just tell myself... you gotta keep up with lidarman this year, you gotta keep up with lidarman this year......

This quote is stuck on my fridge and it reminds me of the drive inside of me that makes me want to ride, no matter how big the mountain. And, what gets me back on my bike no matter how bad the crash.

THIS is printed out and stuck to my monitor. I also keep a copy in my purse to pull out and read should I need a reminder of what I need to do not only on the trail, but in life.

"DH technique...." focus way out front. Plan ahead and know the course. Stay loose. If you come unseated, shoulder roll, get up and get back on,, accelerate and refocus. Feel the ride, revel in the excitement, try a grin. Let out a yell, ok, 2!
Nothing like sex to take your mind off a long climb-Chip.

It used to be song lyrics. Now it's sexual thoughts. Mentally channeling the energy I'm expending into these visions provides me with what I need to get to the top. It's wonderful, I tell ya.

Typically I only use this technique while riding solo.

When riding with others I find the simple act of trying to keep up to be enough inspiration. That, and Jive's protruding buttocks up in front of me.

You're thinking about sex with Jive's protruding buttocks in front of you...Does your wife know about this?

I usually like to imagine my legs as a machine just continuously pumping. That and the "Ride it you F'n pu$$y" thought tend to keep me going.

The whole poem is motivational. I particularly like the part "Under the blugeonings of chance, my head is bloody, but unbowed."

I also find myself repeating "I am the master of my fate, I am the Captain of my soul" towards the end of long rides.

This poem has always been one of my favorites, but Timothy McVeigh kind of gave it a bad rap using it as his final words...

If I'm out riding solo which is usually the case, and I'm starting to lag, I pretend I'm in a race and my fiercest rival is reeling me in. "Keep pushing, block out the pain", I say to myself. But I notice as I get older I'm more likely to say, "Who am I trying beat?" "Don't kill yourself". And if I'm climbing that long murderous hill that I only clean one out of ten tries, and legs are lead and lungs are on fire, I start having visions of an article I once read about crazed Tour De France climbers pedaling themselves dead (literally) from asphixiation. Although I doubt that's possible with the meager effort I'm making in comparison, it sometimes makes me back off. I don't race mountain bikes, yet,(Biking Viking's race recap made me want to try) but have raced off-road motorcycles for ten years, and am driven by competition, so I appreciate the input from everyone. Theme from Rocky? "Eye of the Tiger"? Whatever gets your juices going.

"Those who are victorious plan effectively and change decisively. They are like a great river that maintains its course but adjusts its flow...they have form, but are formless. They are skilled both planning and adapting and need not fear the result of a thousand battles; for they win the war in advance, defeating those that have already lost."
