| Where and how do you carry your camera on rides? | Braids Mar 27, 2002 7:33 AM | | I did a quick search of the archives and didn't come up with a specific answer so I'm just going to ask the question.
Do you keep it in a backpack/hydration pack in a seat bag or somewhere else? Do you wrap it in padding? Has it survived a crash in your secrect hiding place? is it digital, point and shot or an SLR?
If the nice man who has been helping me at the camera shop is in today I'm probably going to buy a digital camera today. I want to make sure he gets commission.
Am I missing anything? |
| In the front pocket of my MTBR/NEMA baggies. | Finch Platte Mar 27, 2002 7:41 AM | | I don't even notice it's there, and I can whip it out (the camera) quickly to catch Jilm crashing.
Never had a problem landing on it- but it gets wet quickly if it starts to rain.
Camelbak is the other option, but I have to plan the set ups farther (further? forther?) in advance because it takes so damn long to take out of the pack.

| In the past I always put it in my camelbak | kristian Mar 27, 2002 8:01 AM | | But on the last "picture taking" ride I lashed my carrying case to one of the chest straps on my camelbak so it was hanging in front of me. It worked quite well like that and I took a lot more pictures than I normally do. I will continue to do that in the future on rides where I plan on taking lots of pictures. BTW, it's a digital point and shoot. |
| Similar setup.... | ciclistagonzo Mar 27, 2002 8:11 AM | | I use the Camelbak phone attachement, easy to grab the camera and it stays put. Unless I totally faceplant, the camera's well protected too.
BTW - I use a Canon Elph LT APS so it's super tiny which helps.

| That new idea works well... | Chef Mar 27, 2002 8:24 AM | | However, I keep my camera in a lightly-padded (Lowe Alpine) case on my belt strap, lashed towards the back - very easy to reach, doesn't interfere with body english, and usually out of the way in crashes. The few times I've kept the camera in the pack, I've taken almost no pictures.
I ride with Lucky occasionally; she keeps hers on her shoulder strap - of course, she's got a Canon ELPH (smallest damned digital camera I've ever seen), and can get away with it.

| re: Where and how do you carry your camera on rides? | lnin0 Mar 27, 2002 8:08 AM | | SLR - too big and bulky to carry unless I am taking an entire backpack or messanger bag. then i would still probably wrap it in something for protection. i imagine this would slow me down also so the there wouldn't be too much concern for crashing. taking it out and setting up would be a pain but if you are looking for scenic landscapes this is the best route to go.
Digital - slip it into my camel back since its kind of bulky and never have a problem with it. however it takes a while to get out so it usually find myself not using it much. also, my digital has poor shutter speeds so you can't really catch anything moving too quickly or its a blur.
Point and Click (my personal fav) - best choice is the canon elf (you can also get this digital too which would probably be the ultimate camera to carry). it is so small you can pop it in a cargo pocket on your shorts that has a closure. easy to get out and snap pics. not the most protected place but those little cameras can take a pretty good beating. |
| in my camelback, but the problem is you'll miss chances | ol-crank Mar 27, 2002 8:15 AM | | last sunday I was just 20 minutes from home when a large doe jumped in front of me about 50 yards away. By the time I stopped, (she stood there for a few seconds) got the pack off and got my camera out she was gone. Using a nikon digital and have gone otb and so far no damage to the camera but I ride more carefully knowing its there.

| I use | Steve-O Mar 27, 2002 8:16 AM | | one of these on my camelback shoulder strap. I have a PowerShot S300 Digital Elf so it's a pretty small camera and fits nicely in here.
Found it at REI in the backpack accessories. |

actually I use a SLR with a water resistant camera case sip tied to my Camelbak. I use a seatpost mounted bike rack for epics. |
| What I do | Zaphod Mar 27, 2002 9:15 AM | | Is use the Kodak model 18. This is a 35mm camera that's basically one very small step above a disposable, costing $22. WAIT... before you think I'm insane, I sometimes carry my serious kit, a Yashica SLR with Zeiss 50mm/1.7lens+ an ok 300x zoom w/doubler (600x).
The cheap camera resides in a jersey pocket. If I shred it, who cares.
The real stuff gets packed inside a padded bag inside the camel.
The reality is that the sh***y little camera has caught some exceptional pictures. It's irritating how good they are. I'll probably be the first person to run Fuji Velvia in such a cheap camera. The film costs approach the camera's!
Happy shooting

| I just bought a Canon G2 on my lunch | Braids Mar 27, 2002 9:56 AM | | I'm going to check out MEC (MEC = Canada's REI) for camera bags. The guy who helped me was not in today because he was sick plus the store raised the price $100 from what I was quoted two weeks ago. I got the old price but I still wanted to ask the guy some questions. He should be in tomorrow and I'm going to ask him some more questions.
Anybody else have experience, hints or suggestions for this Camera or MTB photography?
I'll go to Photography review of course after I play with it this weekend.
Thanks in advance. |
