| Of race fans, culture clashes and flying bmx bikes. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:03 AM | | I spent Sunday, the big amateur day, at Sea Otter.
No "famous" riders, just some amateurs out having some fun (despite all of the whining about how muddy the Mountain cross course was).
Race fans? Are these guys ready for a truck pull or what? |
| Mountaincross. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:05 AM | | You could tell who the fast guys were just by the quality of their berm lean. |
| In the lead. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:07 AM | | Mountain cross is very spectator friendly since there is so much carnage and so many lead changes. |

| Crashfest. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:21 AM | | This picture illustrates the total chaos (Kaos for you old folks) that happens during some of the heats.
The guy in first place was in second place, to the guy running, until the guy on the ground aced him out going over the jump that is right before this section. Mr. first place got booted to third and was screaming his head off. "You focking focker!"
Then the first two guys took each other out and he cruised to victory. |
| Focused, lean is working. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:23 AM | | Fast. |
| Seriousness is over-rated. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:24 AM | | Not quite the ideal form but notice the big shit-eating grin. |
| And the best racer out there too! | Zonic Man Mar 27, 2002 9:11 AM | | Dan K won the hardtail downhill, bikercross, and dual slalom, all with that funky shit eating grin. Damn he's good on a bike.
Thanks for the pics, pete. A lot. |

I usually always use clips now though. |

| Culture clash. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:32 AM | | A slow grind of a climb on the XC course ran right along the mountain cross course.
This guy was doing some heavy thinking trying to answer the question;
"Why?" |
| My favorite. That picture captures so much more than... | Biking Viking Mar 27, 2002 9:34 AM | | ...a visual image.
Thanks for the show, Pete - the possibilities offered by your new camera have really taken your digital photography to a new level.

| Ahh! Get that pic away from me! | K-Zero Mar 27, 2002 9:54 AM | | D@amn...I really, really hated that section of the race. You think you're going to hit the pavement, then discover that they've added this little surprise.
Awesome shooting though Pete. Thx for the post as always.
K-Zero (<<--was asking the same question: "why?") |

| Some jumping (yumping for you scandanavians) | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:33 AM | | |
| Short scandinavian language lesson. | Biking Viking Mar 27, 2002 9:47 AM | | Words for "Jumping" in Scandinavian languages:
Norwegian: Hopping (Interestingly, English "Hopping" is jumping (pron: yumping)) - but then again Norway is a backwards country in many other ways, too.
Danish: Spring
Swedish: Hoppning or jumpning (pron: yumpning)
Now back to the show.

| Those bmx guys and their flying machines. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:44 AM | | Pretty wild stuff,, especially the guy that was riding with broken ribs. |
| High and sideways. | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:45 AM | | Sounds like one of Jive's ex-wives. |
| What's up with thse helmets? | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 8:46 AM | | In the foreground. |
| They look like Protec Helmets to me... | Stine Mar 27, 2002 8:56 AM | | They are much cheaper than your "fufu trendy" Giros etc, but they are tough.
High density shell for durability
Dual density foam lining for multiple impact
Built for max strength and durability
They don't look very cool, but they get the job done. Those guys crash a LOT, and those Protec's can take a big hit more than once unlike others.
(have a Protec that I used to use for high wind windsurfing)
But you know all this and just needed a topic line....right? |
| "fufu trendy"? | Pete. Mar 27, 2002 9:01 AM | | I'll leave that one untouched.
Key words:
"helmets in the foreground"
The spectators are wearing helmets with lots of goofy stickers.
It's not that dangerous being a spectator.

| GREAT SHOTS Pete... | BCRider Mar 27, 2002 8:53 AM | | You really captured some fine moments there.
I don't know if this was a new event but I can see where it could get big over the next few years. It's got everything. Speed, competition and spectator appeal. |
| GREAT SHOTS Pete... | gw Mar 27, 2002 9:11 AM | | yea, really good photos pete. thanks alot.
2 questions.
is that zonic mans normal bullit with a fox forx and an airshock in the back?
anyone know what bike the guy in the air of the picture titled "Collision imminent" is riding? looks like a disco, maybe the new dual frame from karp? |
| Some answers. | Zonic Man Mar 27, 2002 9:57 AM | | Yes, that is my bullit.
The Karp is a disco with the 24" rear end, adn the links "flip flopped" with a shorter stroke shock for less travel..."the new DS bike" |
| Have you tried the floating brake yet? Comments? NM | CraigH Mar 27, 2002 11:01 AM | | nm |

| BMX v MTB | 3q Mar 27, 2002 11:25 PM | | MTB - inches of plush soft travel front and rear
BMX - fully rigid
Why then can these BMX'ers pull awesome air and we MTB'ers cringe at 6 foot drops.... oh I wish I was 15 again... |
