Severed Dick cranky ride(18 posts)

Severed Dick cranky rideJimC

so Craig H and I grab an impromtu Tues. nite ride. We climbed up Old Buck trail and hit trail head at Severed Dick. Armoured up and away we go.

The trail leads down, and around and over a ladder or 2, then a bit of *get off and push uphill*. As I'm pushing thru that section "woo hoo...free crank and pedal. Hope there's another 'cause I need 2 of these".

I was going to stick it on top of a stump for the owner to find, but shouted ahead to Craig "hey Craig, didja lose a crank?" expecting a "nope".

Got a "ya!" geez!

Next 10-15 are spend scouring the trail for the crank bolt, but it was AWOL, so Craig valiantly rode a 1-crank ride down Severed Crank, er, Dick.

Beatiful full moon, did I tell you about the boinking owls we heard?

It was fun and well worth it, if only I could write well enough to convey the true feeling. Shadows, silence (except boinking owls), the rush of streams and rivulets, the smell of evergreen, the feel of dirt and rock.

Night riding is the BEST. Jim <--2 cranks
Yup, that was certainly a memorable ride!CraigH

Between the 2 owls going at it, and 2 guys wandering around in the forest looking for a bolt, riding small drops on one leg.

Still had a smile when I got to the bottom!

The post ride beer tasted good too!

Called the LBS to order the missing bolt and another set to carry as spares.

that ends well. Hey I had Kokanee in the fridge (I didn't buy it - I swear), but not as good as the stuff you got, thanks Craig. Jim

At night, with snow on the shore?!?! I wish I could be good enough to experience that... Maybe someday.

In the mid time I'll practice riding with just one crank, just in case.

No snow last night, it has warmed up in the last couple of daysCraigH

and Severed & BP are low enough that they are one of the first areas to melt off.

Night snow riding is a blast though. Usually it involves a lot of laughing and giggling. It would probably be hilarious to watch, something like the Keystone Cops.

Ah, the ol' drop the Hussefelt off the RaceFaceBB on ride with JimC rountine! I could wax poetic about the disbelief I had when I doth loose thy isis in the presense of boogervonbullit but I shall abstain.

Lock-tite, tighten, ride, check-em. If the spline flutes get mashed, get used to this routine.

Do as I say not as I do though - last weekend did an overhaul and found my rotor bolts were all loose...had myself a floating rotor!! Geez, wonder how long that had been going on?
Done the floating rotor thing last year.CraigH

No one on the ride had a Hayes size torx allen key either. Rolled down the road on Fromme. Bummer of a ride!

If I have the space, I change them to allen. Removable locktite now too.

I think the spline on the BB is okay. Threads don't look stripped either.

Isis is funny, you don't know the bolt is loose until the crank falls off. With square drive, you know if it is even a little loose as it makes horrible noises.
Loctite and self-extracting bolts....Monte

that's my fix for self-loosening ISIS crank bolts. At least IF they do come loose (Loctite seems to have fixed that) you don't lose the bolt. Blue loctite works well. It's removable too. I do it all the time.

Monte
Whose Isis self extracting crank bolts are you using?CraigH
Mar 27, 2002 6:56 PM
I have self extractors on almost all my other bikes, but not on the Bullit. I didn't even know they made self extractors for those.
Shimano and Truvativ....Monte

I've gotten self-extracting bolts with all my Truvativ Stylo cranksets. I got a pair of Shimano Ultegra 105 self-extracting bolts from one of the LBS in B'ham. Seems that the 2 splined bb spindles at least share the same bolt. You can get them through any dealer that uses the QBP catalog, they're in there.

Hopefully the LBS replaced the bolts on the crankset that they robbed to give to me. Let me know if you can't get any.

Monte
Hussefelts don't come with them...CraigH
Mar 27, 2002 9:43 PM
or at least mine didn't.

Actually, I think mine didn't come with any bolts but the RF XS BB did. I may be wrong though.
No, they don't....Monte
Mar 28, 2002 7:15 AM
that's why I bought a set. After having them come loose on my Stylo's so many times I made sure every set had self-extracting bolts so I wouldn't lose the bolts.

Proper torque and blue loctite has fixed the bolts from coming loose again. And you can still get them off with a regular long handle 8 mm allen wrench.

Just called LBS and ordered a set...CraigH

of self extracting crank bolts for a RF XS Isis BB. He hopes to have some for early next week, but if not he will have a bolt that I can use to replace the missing one until the self extracting ones come in.
