| Fruita campground suggestions? | hardtailer Mar 27, 2002 10:56 AM | | Planning an early June trip to Fruita and will be camping there for five days. Can someone recommend a good campground? Looking for one that's central to the trails and to town.
Saw the Saddlehorn camp area in Colorado Natl Monument south of I-70, also saw the Colorado River SP in Fruita. Is there a favorite here?
Thanks for your help! |
| My preference | zilla Mar 27, 2002 11:10 AM | | I personally like Hi-line, just North of Loma.. Showers, grass, and cheap. $13 a nite. You will need to make a reserevation though as it fills up in the summer.. The Colorado River CG is new I believe, and I am going to take a look-see next time I'm down that way.

| re: Fruita campground suggestions? | Cabin Fever Mar 27, 2002 11:24 AM | | wheni was there, we stayed at some pretty nice campgrounds, but i forget what the name was! they had showers and bathrooms and water and stuff. they ever flooded the ground routinely! it was very odd.
next time i go there, i'll no doubt be staying at the free campgrounds up on the hwy 18 or whatever, near the trailhead for Joe's Ridge and all that stuff. hope to see ya there, man! |

| If Camping on 18 Rd | J.D. Mar 27, 2002 2:32 PM | | Remember to bring your groovers. Also, if you must have a fire, bring your own firewood and use a firepan. It's illegal to crap in the desert, as well as illegal to gather or cut firewood. Pack out all of your poop and garbage. The last few years have seen many abuse the Bookcliffs camping area and there is nobody to point a finger at except "mountain bikers". The BLM is currently reviewing the use of that area and if people continue to disregard simple etiquette standards, they will close it to camping and even possibly to mountain biking. Too many people (from Fruita, as well as other places) have worked too hard, too long to have a gem like that area taken away. Be responsible. |
| The Colorado National Monument is beautiful | kristian Mar 27, 2002 11:25 AM | | ...but it's a probably 10 mile drive into Fruita (I remember it taking about 20 minutes). From Fruita it's between a 10 and 30 minute drive to the trails (depending on where you ride) so if you stay at the monument, you are looking at a half hour plus drive every time you ride.
The Monument IS beautiful and the views from the campsite are amazing to wake up to which almost makes it worth the drive though. The only problem is that it's SO tempting to ride there, but you aren't allowed to (unless it's done on the road). |
| The Colorado National Monument is beautiful | KW Mar 27, 2002 1:43 PM | | I just camped in the Monument this past weekend. That place is sweet
and I try to stay there, at least one night, whenever I'm in Fruita.
I got there Friday evening and Friday night was quite windy.
Saturday was windy too. It was howling on top of Mack Ridge!
Riding singletrack is tricky in a strong cross wind. |
| Camping in Fruita | MikeG Mar 27, 2002 12:53 PM | | Camp at the trailheads for Joe's Ridge etc... its on the north side of the valley off whatever road. Stop by te bike shop in town for a map with directions. The camping there is free and its usually just other mountainbikers.
For showers the best thing to do is to use the indoor pool/showers at the high school's indoor pool near the freeway in town. The high school provides community swimming at night for $2. I cant remember which days this is offered but I think it is just about every night. $2 gets you a swim (if you want) but more importantly, hot showers.
Check on the community board downtown for info or just call the school when you get there to find out the swimming times.
You can also park/camp outside Colorado National monument (south side of valley). I think this is free as long as you park off the road (This is what we did). One girl we met had camped out by herself there one night. She was a german girl and didnt know much english. We talked to her in the morning and I think she thought we were the Rangers and were going to bust her. We saw her again 2 weeks later on our trip, this time camping inside Zion national park. I guess she didnt want to be scared anymore and decided to pay the money.
hope this helps

| Hi Line.... | jeffss Mar 27, 2002 2:55 PM | | is aweful during the weekend during early June. We camped there last year in June and it was full of white trash rednecks. Cops were there loud noisy with many fights people driving 100 yards to a rest room and the small lake was full of noisy boats and jet skies. During the week it was great but go any where else during the weekend. Jeff |
| Rednecks?? | zilla Mar 27, 2002 3:16 PM | | You musta missed the great MTBR ho-down of 98.. Had the ranger out 2-3 times and Shiva got a welcome to Colorado ticket afterwards.. Yes it can be noisey, but it is still pretty nice IMHO..
