Shops in Vancouver, BC (27 posts)
| Shops in Vancouver, BC | Lady Mar 27, 2002 2:02 PM | | Anybody have any suggestions where to buy a good high end MTB in Vancouver? I'm looking for a Fisher, or a Trek, or Specialized. I just moved here, and I want to go somewhere where the selection and the service are both good.
Any ideas? |
| a few names | islander Mar 27, 2002 2:11 PM | | You'll likely dig the service and wares at BikeCellar on 4th (1/2 block west of Burrard) or try Cyclepath on Broadway near Granville. Both stores have cool managers and the brands you're after.
See you on the dirt,

| Steed in NV caries Fisher... | CraigH Mar 27, 2002 2:11 PM | | Bike Cellar & Dunbar in Van., & Dizzy NV. caries Specialized. Can't think of Trek.
You'll find that most LBS here carry Canadian bikes. Norco, Kona, Rocky Mountain, Brodie & Devinci.
How high are you looking? If you are looking for high end HTs, DeKerf?
Check the yellow pages, most dealers have ads listing what brands they carry.
As for my LBS, I've been happy with Westpoint in Kerrisdale (mgr. is Tim)& on West 10th (mgr. is Sara). |
| re: Shops in Vancouver, BC | JimC Mar 27, 2002 2:15 PM | | lowest Fisher prices http://www.steedcycles.com, TREK http://www.johnhenrybikes.com, also check Dizzy cyles, and Specialized also at John Henry and Dizzy.
There are many good shops, I might suggest since yer new to wait a bit as you may decide an XC bike is not a good fit to ride the North Shore?
You *may* wind up "XC-ing" Like Knolly here on yer new rig. Jim |
| re: Shops in Vancouver, BC | Lady Mar 27, 2002 3:14 PM | | Thanks for the input. I am kind of sold on a XC bike-- freeriding is a bit out of my league -- thanks for the inspirational photo though ;)
I've heard good things about West Point + John Henry, bad things about the cellar.
I'll have to go see for myself! |
| The folks at West Point are super.... | Stine Mar 27, 2002 5:33 PM | | I got the best "vibes" there. She (I believe her name was Sarah) spent a lot of time with us.
For a "different" experience, check out the ombiance at On Top.
hehe Those guys are fun. |
| She is at the West 10th store now. Yup, name is correct. NM | CraigH Mar 27, 2002 5:45 PM | | nm |
| re: Shops in Vancouver, BC | Gromit Mar 27, 2002 11:25 PM | | Personaly, I'm really happy with the service that I've gotten from Bike Cellar as well as two others that I know who got their rides from them. If you're looking for beginner/intermediate riding, they're also kicking off a riding group. | Nothing wrong with those bikes but..... | anon Mar 27, 2002 3:16 PM | | ....since your looking to spend some coin, why not consider some of the brands CraigH mentioned? You might want to consider some of the Canandian brands since they are designed and built with Canadian trails in mind. Just my .02cents. :)
My wife and I love our Rocky Mountains and got a smoking hot deal at Simon's Bike Shop. We live in Seattle so I can't speak on thier wrenches but the sales service was great. I'll go there for my next bike.

| Simon's good prices ... | K'Endo) Tramp (okay Mar 27, 2002 3:20 PM | | rude service. If you're not a bike courier or a regular, they don't care about you.

| You're an OK tramp? wtf? | JimC Mar 27, 2002 3:22 PM | | Engineering getting thru to you Ken? Hey we should talk about the US invasion soon, eh? jim |
| Stupid mtbr system ... BOYCOTT the | K'Endo Mar 27, 2002 4:17 PM | | dirty buggers!
It was supposed to read
Tramp (okay, K'Endo)
Clearly, a comma in the name blank does some weird switcheroo thing.
It was a funny joke. The original post was from 'Lady'. Get it? Huh? Huh?

| Bark | JimC Mar 27, 2002 4:26 PM | | Bark, yes I get it. $50 fine for bad joke, no biscuit! Jim |
| Wow, that wasn't my experience. | anon Mar 27, 2002 3:50 PM | | Everyone was super nice in the shop. We came in to rent a bike for my wife. She saw a nice ElementRace on sale, one thing lead to another and about 2hours later we walked out with a new bike, an RF seatpost for me, and some local knowledge on what trails to ride at our destination of Whistler. Actually had Simon himself helping us and the wrenches were the ones providing trail tips. It was really busy too. Didn't see any celebs though! :P
Eric E. shops there. Maybe Simon thought we were celebraties too!
Next time you're there you need to act like your in town doing a movie! ;) |
| Are you sure that isn't | K'Endo Mar 27, 2002 4:21 PM | | the salesman that sold him his new car?
Check out the back alley next time you're there. The black Mercedes CLK55 AMG parked in the reserved spot is his. Apparently, he sells a few bikes cause he gets a new one every year.

| Hhhmmm, sounds to me like.... | anon Mar 27, 2002 6:19 PM | | ....someone's got some issues. If the guy can sell great bikes at great prices and make a profit more power to him. He must be doing something right.
Now for the fellow in the picture with Simon, Car dealer?!?!? Actually, he's been known to take his "bike" off-road quite a bit. I'm surprised you didn't recognize him. You never know who you'll run into in the woods. :P |

| Almost any of 'em | K'Endo) Tramp (okay Mar 27, 2002 3:18 PM | | First, you need to tell us what kind of riding you're looking to do. If you plan to join the North Shore types, I recommend staying away from Fisher, Trek, Spec'd. You'll find very few of 'em on the trails and they won't last long. I'd recommend OnTop or John Henry, both in North Van, both support trail maintenance/advocacy efforts.
If you're hunting down XC trails, then those companies have some good models. Dizzy (also North Van) is a good place and they deal Fisher, I think. The owner's wife is a former World Cup XC racer - dropped out to have a family or something crazy like that. The shop is also very supportive of trail advocacy groups.
Pick your riding style first, then find the shop that suits because riding styles are very specific around here.

| Heeeeyyyyy...... | YardSale Mar 27, 2002 3:52 PM | | My Spec'd is a '97 and it's not broke...... mind you I do baby it by ensuring that I hit the ground first so it has a nice soft place to land and all the original parts have been replaced except the frame and it weighs almost a whole ton and did I mention it goes to 11?
All that aside if you are going to do the NS Free ride thing you will need a modicum of robustity in whatever you buy... the shops listed above have heaps of bikes that fit the bill. Ride a couple and see what feels the best to you. Don't buy a bike just because it goes with your clothes/car/dog or a magazine review says it's great.
Good luck!

| "Modicum of robustity" | Yoda Mar 27, 2002 4:14 PM | | hehe...I like that. Think I'll try and slip into a conversation at the dinner table tonight. |

| re: Shops in Vancouver, BC | BCRider Mar 27, 2002 4:22 PM | | A couple of others not mentioned are Cove Bikes in, strangely enough, Deep Cove. And my fave, since it's on the way home, Edmonds Cycles in Burnaby. He only handles Norco but he's got pretty much the whole line at fair to good prices.
And I'm surprised no one has mentioned Cap's. There's 2 or 3 locations. They're a one stop shop from low to high. And they have Trek.
Oh, and there's Blak Dog out in Port Moody, Port Coquitlam. Seem to have lots of rides on sale when I was there a couple of weeks ago. |
| Cove is great if you want to be ignored.... | CraigH Mar 27, 2002 4:42 PM | | good prices on sale stuff though (my experience anyway.)
No Caps in Vancouver or North Van anymore. They still might have stores in New West or Surrey though. A few years ago was looking for a mid-line HT for my girl friend at the Vancouver store. Was interested in a Fisher and she wanted to test ride one in her size. They wouldn't bring one in. No sale.... |
| lol... I found that partially true... | Stine Mar 27, 2002 5:47 PM | | I've been there 3 different times on our 2 trips there. Different experience every time. I think it depends on who's working. The last time I was there, one guy spent quite a while with us and even let me ride a bike out of the store and ride up and down the street.
He gave me a sheet with sale prices and we talked about shipping etc.
THAT was the good experience.
The other 2 times I felt the cold shoulder mostly. But I did get a very good deal on a raceface jacket and a cove long sleeve jersey. |
| Argggg | Pat T.® Mar 28, 2002 8:04 AM | | I won't go back to Cove...worst service ever... But I get great service at On Top and John Henry (they also have damn good cawfeeee). |
| re: Shops in Vancouver, BC | BlizzardPaPa Mar 27, 2002 10:21 PM | | 'Why not buy Canadian?' That's what a salesperson asked me before I bought my Norco. Rocky Mountain and Norco definately built some serious XC Bikes. If you are looking for a highend XC Bike, I would recommend athe Rocky Mountain Blizzrd.
As for shop, I recommend Jubilee bike shop. It is small shop on Imperial Street in Burnaby(behind the Metrotown) The salesperson was very helpful in helping you selecting the best bike for you and your budget. My wife is a picky shopper and she just love the attention she recieved from the sales guy. |
