Dammit, dammit, dammit! (5 posts)
| Dammit, dammit, dammit! | S+J Mar 27, 2002 9:41 PM | | It was nice out at 3:00 PM today, so I decided to take a quick pavement ride. First time I've ridden since late December. I take out the Rockhopper and spend about 10 minutes checking it over. Looked fine so off I went.
5 minutes later, SNAP!! One of my chain's links snapped right in two while going uphill, sending my face right into the handlebar. First time that's ever happened to me (sure I've broken chains at the pin, but I've never actually broken a link in half. Crappy OEM chain!). Fortunately I didn't have to walk far.
Result: Chainstay scratched all to hell, bloody lip, and the visor broken off of my new helmet.
Fock.

| here's what i did | Cabin Fever Mar 27, 2002 10:14 PM | | i've broken too many damn 9 speed chains, and one time i actually broke the link itself in half, in that the metal was ripped apart. so i put it on my keychain. gives me a feeling of being strong. i know i'm not, but hey, it doesn't inflate my ego THAT much. |
| re: Dammit, dammit, dammit! | mtbikernate Mar 28, 2002 7:33 AM | | Ah, the trusty chain snap. That happened to me in November. I took the trusty steed out for a ride on the bike path one afternoon...had an itch to ride, but the ground was mushy. So anyway, I went to check out a new section of bike path that the city had just finished. The new section began as an old steel railroad bridge that crossed over the existing bike path and the river, and getting to it involved climbing a switchback. Shortly after crossing the rail bridge, there was a road crossing with one of those island thingies so you can cross part of the street, wait for the other lane to clear, and then finish crossing. So here I was sitting in the island waiting for an opening in traffic. I got my opening and began to pedal across the street. SNAP! The chain gave out on me, and I went into a full endo. I landed in a crumpled heap in the middle of the street, with a dump truck not far off. I would have preferred to lay there and slowly get up, but I had to hurry up and get myself and my bike out of the path of that dump truck. Elderly passers-by saw me with my bloody knee, greasy chain in hand, and my bike with the seat rails bent beyond repair and were extremely concerned. I also smashed the reflector and lamp housing on my frankenlight. I pieced it back together temporarily with clear box tape and silicone engine sealant. It will be getting a new, more durable housing eventually. I also snapped the link itself, not the pin. I'm definitely going to carry spare links from now on...even on the bike path. |

Don't know what you're using, but I've had some trouble with Shimano chains. It got to the point where I was snapping the chain 3-4 times/ride. I have a fairly powerful stroke, but I'm by no means the biggest or strongest guy out there at 165 lbs. Thought it was a derailure setup issue. I rechecked the setup, looked good. Had a professional bike mechanic at a reputable shop check it over, looked good. Tried a new Shimano chain, same problem. Switched to SRAM chain and I haven't had a problem since.
Condolences on the paint job(another good argument for Ti).

| Using a KMC piece of shit... | S+J Mar 28, 2002 8:50 AM | | It came with the bike. I expected it to snap in a week. It didn't. The damn thing lasted a year! I weigh 200 and tend to mash the pedals on climbs. I'm amazed the KMC lasted that long.
Anyway, I bought a SRAM PC89 to replace it. Now all is well (I hope). I think I'm going to make a necklace out of the broken link, like that guy above me suggested.
Oh, and I managed to stay in decent shape over this winter through weight training, but I still gained 10 pounds (ARGH!).
