| Paint Stirpping weekend project complete.. | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 6:07 AM | | Well I am a full time lurker and a part time poster here. I have read a couple of posts about stripping the paint off of a frame and decided to give it a go a couple of weekends ago. The bike is a 01' Homegrown comp which to do the extinction of schwinn I had nothing to loose attempting to change the look a bit. Below are a few pictures of the process and the final product.
Here it is just before the nasty chemicals where applied to the frame. |

| next... | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 6:10 AM | | Here is my favorite part of the bike, with nasty chemicals eating away the paint. Kind of rethinking this whole idea at this point, but to lat to turn back now. |
| next... | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 6:11 AM | | here is the finished product, now I am glad I did this. |
| one more | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 6:12 AM | | another shot. |
| Last one.. | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 6:14 AM | | This is not a great one of the bike but it is a great one of my climbing wall. Therfore it had to be posted. |
| nice! | Kitchenware Apr 22, 2002 6:15 AM | | what did you use to buff it out? I was thinking about getting one of those Access frames for a commuter and doing that. Did it damage the aluminum?

| nice! | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 6:27 AM | | I used a scotch brite pade to buff it and then applied a buffing compound which i purchased at an auto parts shop. I don't recall the exact name of it but it was in a little red and white plastic canister.
No it did not damage the aluminum at all, and since they don't burn on the welds there is no burn marks, therefore the welds look nice. |
| Fraid to be seen riding an "Access?" | lidarman Apr 22, 2002 11:25 AM | | I'm in a mood cause trouble today, I guess. |
| not really | Kitchenware Apr 22, 2002 12:13 PM | | its just that those graphics are horrid those frames are only like 99 bucks now
you can't have too many bikes
punctuation sucks |
| re: Paint Stirpping | Hollis Apr 22, 2002 7:02 AM | | so is it going to stay Polished or are you going to have it painted or powdercoated? |
| re: Paint Stirpping | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 7:39 AM | | I was going to have a design airbrushed onto it but not that it is put together it looks quite stealth, so I will be leaving it posished. |
| re: Paint Stirpping | BCRider Apr 22, 2002 7:43 AM | | Ya might want to use a good quality car wax on there periodically. Eventually the water and stuff will let some of that white corrosion start to take hold otherwise.
Other than that it's lookin' real fine. |
| Thanks for the tip..(nm) | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 7:52 AM | | |

| What nasty chemicals?? | greg1 Apr 22, 2002 12:13 PM | | I don't recall what the name is but I purchased it at a auto parts shop and it was in a red and white container, I believe it is for polishing aluminum rims.
Thanks.

| re: Paint Stirpping weekend project complete.. | Roachman Apr 23, 2002 7:31 AM | | I did this very same thing to a Yellow 98 Judy XC, What I would recommend instead of polishing several times a year is to go to your local Hardware store and buy a can of Extra Thick clear Spray on Enamel. It gives the part a more finished look, I will post some pictures of the fork so you can see what I mean, I am glad to see it worked for a whole bike because I am about to take my Schwinn GS that is yellow and Blue and do the same thing. |
