| POLL: Is mountain biking a culture? (homework help) | fjdkla Apr 22, 2002 6:21 PM | | Based on your experiences with everything that surrounds mountain biking, do you consider mountain biking a culture in and of itself?
If so, how and why?
Let me know what you think! Thanks!

It is very addictive, easy to get caught up in to the point that it's the only thing that really matters.
It is a way of life.
We that live the culture--well we live for it.
Easy 'nuff. Okay.
Now get to work--peruse the web and zines and go earn that "A".

Subculture, yes. Mountain biking has it's own "language" and tends to draw people with enough similar interests and/or personality types to be considered something in and of itself. Only people who mtn bike know what the scars, bruises, clearing a big rock for the first time, and trying to beat the sunset to the bottom of the hill, truly feel like, not to mention how a few pints of IPA taste just a little better after a long ride. Cheers. |

(homework help) | zoo Apr 23, 2002 4:12 AM | | I think the question to ask is; Is mountain biking a culture or is there an outlook on life, an attitude, a set of beliefs that leads a certain group of people to do things like mountian bike? (ie a love for the outdoors, a risk taking mindset, an adventurous spirit, etc...) So maybe mountian bking is a culture or a sub-culture of other cultures (like outdoor culture, athletic culture, adrenaline junkies culture,etc...), but if mountian bikes didn't exist then those same people would possibly rally around some other common cause. How is culture defined? then look around a Mountain bikers and determine whether or not they fit the description....Just thinking out loud... |

To me, mountain biking is more like a cult than a culture. It brainwashes you into tunnelvision where everything becomes mtb. It lures in unsuspecting folks who just thought they'd "give it a try" only to find themselves hopelessly spiralling into mtbdome (not a bad thing). Is it a culture? No. Is it a state of mind? All it takes is one look at someone's face after an epic day on the bike and you have your answer. |

Such as Gun Collecting and Shooting, Hunting, Computers and Games, Football, NASCAR, Military, Paintball, Ham Radios, and so on. It's just what people are into. Every hobbie has it's own lingo and culture. |
