Haro Werks XLS 1.0
Actually, I was mostly wondering about the frame and rear shock (4" RockShox SID XC Adjust). I would be putting all my exsisting good components on it. Would a Manitou SX-r fork work well with it?
Just checking out ideas for replacement frames should mine give out someday. I like the way it looks, but I don't know if it's close to the ride I have now.
Odd thing is... it looks like they don't sell just the frame in this model. At least they don't show it on their website. Just as a complete bike.
Anyhoooo... just wondered if anyone has ridden this pup. Are they very expensive? |
| No first hand knowledge but I think a bike mag just reviewed it. | Rev Bubba May 17, 2002 10:04 AM | | Since I read most of them, I can't be any more specific. Mountain Bike, Dirt Rag, Mountain Bike Action or Bike. I think I can rule out Dirt Rag and Bike if that helps. There might be something on line with either of the other two.

| MAN... it's like pulling teeth surfing /posting here today | Stine May 17, 2002 10:26 AM | | thanks Rev. I'll check the mags I have/get and see.
Think I'll check back in here later. Passion is driving me nuts today. I don't remember many times when it's been this slow for me.
Drives me nuts. |
| Sure is but now we can post as long a post as we want..... | Rev Bubba May 17, 2002 10:32 AM | | Greg, I'm not sure which was worse. Having your post cut off quickly or having it slowly die after you spend a half hour writing something decent. |
| I liked it better before Rev..... | namaSSte May 17, 2002 10:56 AM | | this is like doing an endo on a steep downhill section when you are out in front and getting passed by the field - downright painful! |
| Ever find the review? | Chuckers May 30, 2002 1:13 PM | | I was just curious if you ever found the review of the Haro Werks? If so, what mag and month? |

| I'm a Harovore, wouldn't ya like to be a Harovore, too? | Harovore May 18, 2002 11:04 AM | | Hey, stine.
I've seen a few of these Haro dualies around L.A., and each time I never fail to ask the owners how they like them. Consensus: they all like them a great deal. Some of the selling points they mentioned to me: 1) less moving parts due to single pivot rear suspension design; 2) the feel of the ride and handling resemble a Santa Cruz Superlight; 3) fairly light (not a superlight, but fairly light).
I think that's the less expensive Werks dualie model that Haro offers. The ones I've seen on the trails are the 3.0 I believe -- the red and white model with top-of-the-line components (i.e., XTR, etc.).
Your 3" travel Manitou SX-R (a fork I've always been fond of) should give you a nice XC ride with this bike. Some people like going for a more "balanced" ride, i.e., 4" of travel up front to match the 4" in rear. But, hey, Parkmeister kicks butt on his Superlight and run a 3" Marzocchi fork up front. This is not that uncommon of a XC set up at all, it seems.
I have a Haro dealer a few miles from my home. I can ask him if he can order just the frame if you want. Or, you can give him a call yourself: (323) 256-0703. Tell him that "Herb" (the Korean guy) sent you. FYI, I bought my Haro Escape A-4 Easton hardtail frame from him a few years ago for only $225, and Haro supposedly wasn't selling only their frames back then either. So, it's possible.
Let me know if you want *me* to give him a call, ok? I can do the local call fer ya.

| I thought it looked like a Superlight.... | Stine May 18, 2002 2:54 PM | | that's why I was asking. Superlight is just too expensive for me.
If you would, could you just ask that guy that sells them exactly what the difference is in the frames between the 1, 2, and 3.0?
I couldn't see any difference myself. I just assumed they were the same exact frames and only the components were different.
Of course, I like the black and white color of the 1.0 better than the blue or red.
Actually, do they make them in all black?
;)
Someone had told me that Single pivot designs are harder to pedal around. Have you heard the same?
Just found out there is a new shop in town that carries Haro. I'll go over there and ask how much just a frame would be.
Of course all of this is just hooooey as long as my bike is all good. Who knows.... ever hear of a Kona lasting 20 years?
;)
Guess I should also check into how much a Kona or Rocky simular frame would be eh? Maybe they would not be much more than a Haro. |
| I thought it looked like a Superlight.... | Harovore May 18, 2002 6:34 PM | | Hey again, stine.
I'd bet that the Kona and certainly the Rocky dualie frames would run ya more money than a Haro.
"Charles" has a Superlight and says it's a slice of heaven on climbs. I used to ride a DBR four-bar linkage design which is very similar to the Specialized FSR-XC design ... incredible traction because it's a "fully active" design. This is the same design as the Intense Tracer and many others.
I also had a Mongoose Ampflifier which was just a heavier duty AMP B-3. Interesting that that design got criticized for too much lateral/torsional flex in the rear, but you see this same design in K2's top of the line XC dualie line, the Turner Stinger (I believe that's the model name), and others. Maybe these newer companies have worked out some of that flex. It wasn't that big of a deal in reality.
Anyway, there are so many great dualies out there. It's hard to go wrong these days, but it's always good to know what you're getting. So your inquiries is an excellent idea.
Me? I'm still sold on the 4-bar linkage system.
Have a good one, buddy. |
| Well, thanks and....... | Stine May 18, 2002 6:45 PM | | Funny you should mention the Specialized and the Intense Tracer.
2 other people said those would be good choices for me.
hmmmmmm
Thanks Herb.
