Of Glitter, Donkeys, and Badgers....screampint

The Glitter ride was small this week, but what it lacked in numbers it made up for in quality. JJ was there to meet us, but she had some news that made it impossible for her to join us for a while. She is to join the ranks of motherhood and doesn't have hall pass from her doc to hit the trails. I'm hoping to meet her for a road ride soon.

After all the excitement of J's news we loaded up and headed out into the blustery evening toward 18 Road. We weren't planning a long ride, but we were planning on scoping out what parts of the trails needed work. I had worked on some of them in that area the day before, but had a few things I wanted to show them and some other trails to check. I chose to ride the Surly; it was an easy grab out of the garage.

We headed up Prime Cut and stopped in a few places to block off-trail tracks or see what needed to be done. For the most part, there wasn't a lot of stuff, my work from the day before had helped. We then hit Joe's Ridge and flew down the first twisty section before the Ridge. I felt great on the bike and it was good to let loose. The Ridge itself was so powdery with the brake bumps underneath I wasn't sure if it was wise to ride the thing on my rigid fork, but since I didn't fall I guess it was fine. The only thing that will help that section is rain. I was a little worried about climbing out of the gully at the bottom with the single speed. I thought the trail would be too powdery for the Surly to climb well, but it was in surprisingly good shape. Instead of jumping onto the singletrack after the short stint on the road I dragged everyone up to hook up with upper Kessel to see how one section was holding up and to inspect my handiwork form the day before. We started up and just as we got to the section in question we were greeted with quite a sight. A man was riding on his bike and had his pet with him. Many people take their dogs on the trail with him, but this man had his donkey, Daisy, with him! From a distance, it looked like the man was being chased down the trail by a wild donkey. Turns out, she was quite happy to be there and went mountain biking frequently. She also seemed content to "hang with the girls," as it took some coaxing to get her to go with him. Back at the parking lot we said goodbye to our new found trail friend and climbed back into the vehicles.

On the back from the trail I saw a badger crossing the trail. I've only seen one other badger in this area in the 8 years I've lived here.

I can only imagine the scene when Daisy decides she's had enough!

You have a wonderful place there. I'm anxious to come back and sample more of it.

That was a cool read--I could imagine the trails, 'cause we rode them once, and suddenly there's a jackass along for the ride! Also not hard to imagine.

Our road race last week had a stallion galloping alongside. Much scarier than even just the cat4 women pack alone. Check it out on the cyber cycle biker girls site.

Always following you around. I have a donkey, I use for packing, had him for years, we cal him Festus.. Actually he is a mini-mule, a cross between a shetland and a burro.. He follows us around all over the place and you just can't lose him.. I never tried taking him biking though.. We keep him at the ranch, and he is great pals with one of the horses there, Mokie..I'll have to try taking him biking, that way if I break down I can ride him home!

Now you have Daisy the Mountain Biking Donkey. What is IN the water out there?

The usual questions:

Was she on a rigid, hardtail, or dually? SS?

Flat or risers? Barends? Sock grips?

What saddle does she prefer?

Which Camelbak? (Please please say she had a M.U.L.E.)

Did she wear glitter and a skirt by the time y'all parted ways?
