| Reminds me of growing up in Los Angeles... | PC1 May 19, 2002 6:51 PM | | in the late 60's early 70's. We used to huck our cheapy Stingray copies (bought at the local Western Auto store for $14.98) off the 5 foot loading docks at the local Alpha Beta supermarket. Don't know what we were thinking. Especially with all the broken knuckles we brought home. The movie "On Any Sunday" really did damage to the kids in my neighborhood. Doing that stuff is just plain FUN!!! Now I'm 39 and teaching my 3-year-old twin boys the joys of riding in back of the local strip malls. Within reason for a 3-year-old. They're just jumping curbs for now. And as for me? My wife just keeps taking out new life insurance policies on my behalf. Gotta have fun with all the crud life throws at you.

| Saw the making of that movie on the Speed channel | Pirate Girl May 19, 2002 9:17 PM | | Unfortunately it was on late last night, and I missed most of it while dozing in and out of a stupor (from being tired that is...not what everyone else is thinking). The Speed channel usually reruns stuff like that, so hopefully I'll be able to tape it. Great movie. I love the scenes where they jump the dirt bikes...that was sick air back then. I usually try to spot all of the old Hodakas while watching that movie. I have the same bike as the one where the motocross kid gets his head stuck between the frame and the forks. That movie has a great soundtrack too.

| Now we're getting nostalgic | pedalAZ May 20, 2002 7:42 AM | | I had a highly modified Ace 100. I used to go around looking for Super Rats to beat! Funny thing - I'm now mtb'ing a few of the same trails I used to ride the dirt bike on back in the 70's. The rest of the old trails are now subdivisions.
The Ace 100 got retired to the family ranch where it was 7 miles to the nearest pavement. Unfortunately, one of the cowboys took the engine out of it for a high-clearance go-cart project. |
| of similar interest... | airwreck May 19, 2002 10:57 PM | | Bruce Brown had made Endless Summer prior to On Any Sunday, the story/movie detailing the making of that film is really cool as well. Even if you are not a surfer, it is a remarkable story. Didn't even realize there was OAS version. Unfortunatly it is unlikely that is available at the local video rental, unless you live in our neighborhood. |
| Endless Summer.....on DVD... | Battman42 May 19, 2002 11:12 PM | | Here's a link to the DVD.... From DVD Empire.http://www.dvdempire.com/Exec/v4_item.asp?userid=31233918981375&item_id=12398
Definitely a great film.

| Livin' on the edge.... | Dirt Pilot May 20, 2002 4:09 AM | | ...I like the looks you get from people when riding stairs and stuff like that...especially when they see it's not some goofy kid but an adult who becomes a goofy kid when he/she throws a leg over their bike.
Now ya gotta turn around and ride UP the stairs...weight back, elbows bent, attack with speed. Stairs with a short rise and longish tread are easiest to learn on. The stairs coming down from Buckingham Fountain towards Shore Drive are a good example of this. |
| lol.... that's where my bravery went out the window... | Stine May 20, 2002 4:18 AM | | where I rode there were a set of small stairs PERFECT for trying to climb up for the first time. In other words, so small that if there was just ONE step, I would have done it and made it. Just can't get up the courage to try it. Even with armour. Plus, I had the clipless pedals back on the bike..... no way!
Maybe someday I will try when I get better at climbing steep bumpy stuff period. |

| Good Job! | Steve-O May 20, 2002 6:21 AM | | Next step... Wheelie Drops?
Wheelie drops are a skill I never learned when starting out mountain biking (along with true bunny hops, log jumps, etc.). Several weeks ago I found a 1 ft. drop and practiced repeatedly until I was confident. Then I found a 2 ft. drop and landed a few. Now I'm on the lookout for stuff on the trail to test my newfound skill.
It's cool to progress isn't it? Take little steps and soon you'll be surprised at what you can do. |
