| South Saint Vrain Ride or How to fark up your rotator cuff | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:01 AM | | Yesterday (Sunday) a few locals hooked up to ride South Saint Vrain on a spectacular sunny Colorado day. Myself, lidarman, DaveM, Eric, and Mike were to meet at the SSV trailhead, but there was some confusion and DaveM went to a different trailhead. The rest of us set off on a technical uphill that would please any front ranger.
Following is a few pics of the ride. Keep in mind I never take pics on the fun downhill stuff so these are pretty lame. :)
This is Mike (I believe... I'm horrible with names until I've ridden with you at least twice). Regardless, this dude is a good technical climber and pretty fun to ride with. |
| lidarman bouncing up the trail | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:03 AM | | Here's lidarman on one of the MANY rocky sections. Keep in mind, everything is obviously steeper, more rocky and slicker than it looks in the photos. |
| Here's Erich in his happy place | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:08 AM | | I've never seen the pic he was describing on the ride, but I think this is similar to what he's talking about. Something about feeling like this when he's 'in the zone'. Maybe it was the bag of chocolate covered java beans he devoured on the ride. ??? |
| Mike (?) on the climb | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:11 AM | | Note to self, avoid that skewer on the way back down. |
| lidarman waiting his turn. | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:14 AM | | this place is just one cool tech section after another. Here's lidarman waiting in line. Note the use of armor. I'll be purchasing some of that soon. |
| Erich and lidarman | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:19 AM | | Erich and lidarman on a break while I adjust my soon to be farked rear der. |
| The PIB shot. | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:22 AM | | lidarman |
| Look who we bumped into! | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:26 AM | | DaveM coming down as we were going up.
You have to show me the rest of the stuff up there Dave! |
| lidarman on my tail | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:28 AM | | took this one while I was riding, then nearly crashed into a tree. |
| post ride bsing | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:34 AM | | lidarman, you big poseur.
I guess when you're the first one down the hill you have time to sit around. |
| Ride stats... | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 8:41 AM | | One rotator Cuff injury (mild) and a toasted XT rear der. The XT was heading for the spare parts bin anyway. It was just a bit tweaked to begin with and I rolled the bike backwards off lidarman's truck and CRUNCH! -beyond repair. Bummer.

| You had better hope it's "mild"... | Stine May 20, 2002 9:11 AM | | Over 3 years ago I injured mine and it STILL bothers me often. At the time, the Doc thought it wasn't bad enough for surgery... just rehab exercises. Maybe it's just my age.
How did you do it? Tree or what? |
| You had better hope it's "mild"... | Kitchenware May 20, 2002 9:34 AM | | I was back behind the seat (waaaay back) bouncing through some rocks on a downhill at speed and lost grip with my right hand. I then tried to control the bike with one arm (while still way back and falling on the tire) to prevent an endo in a nasty spot and that's when it popped, I swerved and my bike lodged between two trees. I didn't hit the trees with my shoulder so I suppose just the jarring and trying to control the bike with one arm did it.
I got this injury about 3 years ago from a bad snowboarding crash and I thought I had it lined out with some excercises. I suppose this was just a freak thing. It's not nearly as bad as it has been before (I can raise my arm above my head) so I'm just going to take it easy and try not to ride (hard) for a couple of days and see where it's at then. Until then, I'll be lifting the milk out of the fridge with the other arm. :)
